Local Pawn shop has one for sale in .54, all brown furniture, the wood has been treated to propane tourch stripes, an small brass tacks all over it, front site missing an no ideal how the bore looks at this point but looks to be pretty clean. What is a good price for one in good shape?
Thanks
Chris

In good shape with a good bore $200-400+ depending on region of the country. The torch job and tacks would reduce value . The average I have seen is $350.

DGW is offering one right now for $225.00.
From what you describe, offer the guy $100.00 and be willing to go as high as $150.00.
The CVA Mountain Rifle, IMHO, is one of the better factory made imports that has ever hit the ml scene. Cleaned up yers should be just fine.

I couldn't find it on DGW, I definitly would like to find it offered new for that price I'd print it off an go dicker with him on it. Thanks
Chris

The US made CVA's have a certain following and collectibility. All CVA Mountain Rifles regardless of origin tend to keep their value. In PA where we have a dedicated flintlock season, the flint models will easily bring 300 to 400.

Mongo,
I would buy it. The .54's are hard to find. The .58's are the golden fleece for collectors. Even with the embellishments, it would bring 3-400 in My area of Washington state. I have a .50 Made In USA that I shoot on a regular basis. Great round ball shooters.

I have an old beat up .54 that I bought at a gun show a couple years ago for $200. It has THE worst bore I have ever seen, my ramrod actually chatters when pushing the ball down the bore. I was planning on reboring it but it is a tack driver as is, go figure.

I don't own one but at one time I did.

I bought it at a Pawn Shop without doing anything but a visual check of the bore. It looked OK.

That MADE IN U.S.A. CVA couldn't hit a barn if it was fired inside it with the doors closed.

Absolutely terrible accuracy.
When I got home from the range and started to clean it the truth was revealed.

About 15 inches down the bore it was ringed.
For a distance of about 4-6 inches the cleaning patched jag almost fell down the bore from its own weight. Then the bore tightened back up and remained that way clear to the breech.

There was no obvious visual swelling of the barrel on the outside but there was no question that there was on the inside.

When I sold that gun I told the buyer the reason he was getting such a low price.
I don't know if he kept the gun or sold it.
If he sold it I hope he told the next buyer about the bulged barrel but knowing how things go I wouldn't bet on it.

90 Grains 2F, .490 Patched Round Ball, Patch .010...Have always killed what I have pointed it at..to Include Elk, Deer, Bear...Been very reliable and accurate..No worries...

mountain rifles keep going up in value these days. There was a time when you paid low cost for them and big bucks for TC's, its been reversed now. Its hard to get $250 out of a TC Hawken, even harder to sell a lyman great plains rifle.

Can't Give away a T/C Hawken. GPR's still move a bit. Sold all but My own CVA Mountain Rifles, and John Browning Mountain rifles. Last 2 weeks have been insane. Now on the look out for more, but I am dreading what I may have to pay for them. Seem to be the fashion of the year???

I've got a TC Hawkens in .45cal, I thought about taking it to the pawn shop an see if he'd be interested in trading me out for it. I also found the Mtn. Rifle on DGW for $225 new, printed that off an taking that in to him also, going to try an get it.

don't know when they quit making them but when I did a google search it popped up so I printed it off.

Traditions made a Mountain Rifle for awhile and Deer Creek still offers one in the Tradtions style,
But they are nowhere near what the CVA MR was, their based more off the Austin&Hallek style MR

My deer creek kit was identicle to my cva mountain rifles pewter nose cap, 4 screw patch box birds eye maple stock exr...

I had a .54 mountain rifle back in 1980's while I was in Kodiak, Alaska. It was a great shooting rifle and very nice looking too. I have kicked myself many times over the years for selling it! if I had a chance to pick up another I wouldn't hesitate.
