Depends on the one you have. I paid 230$ for a new in the box Trapper with the screw in chokes barrel and the fifty caliber barrel too. Which one are we talking about and does it have both barrels?

its on gunbroker and its 185. i thot that was a tad high. i appreciate the info.

There are several versions of this same gun. so without pictures, it is hard to say anything. There is a thick wall barreled full choke version called the Gobbler. There is a thickwalled cylinder version I think. I am not familiar with a dedicated modified barrel as in that ad. Mine is a light weight barrel with screw in chokes. All of the ones called Trapper had rifled barrels available for them or that came with them as a set. I deer hunted Saturday morning, switched barrels and killed a rabbit while slipping and trying to jump shoot a duck at mid day. Sunday morning I killed a small deer at 120+ yards and Sunday afternoon I tried to find more rabbits or other small game. Mine is a nice little gun. I only wish mine had the thickwalled barrel where I could use patched roundball out of the 12 guage barrel.

No reason you can't use a patched rd ball in yours. I shoot rd balls out of my Navy Arms .12 ga and the barrel walls aren't thick on it. If the ball will go in, it will come out. A .690 rd ball should work fine and weighs about 1 1/8 oz. same as a medium weight shot charge.

No, mine has cyinder bores. But if the ball will go through the choke, it will come back out.You may have to use a smaller ball than a .690 and a thicker patch though.

what choke do u have? my 20ga has a mod screw in choke. i use the wads (overshot-cushion-ball-overpowder) and the bare ball is a nice tight fit through the choke. i use .610's and the choke measures .608.

i think it helps to stabilize the ball as it exits, because it doesnt seem to matter what powder charge i use or what kinda wads i put in as long as there is a cushion wad right beneath the ball to keep it centered. its an extremely acurate smoothbore, and the ball always hits perpendicular to the ring left by the choke.

also if u want to use some plastic shot cups, just drop a smaller ball in the cup after u have it in past the choke. i use .530's in the WAA20 wads and it works pretty slick. put an o/p card, or 2, down and 1/2 a cushion or a wonderwad beneath the shot cup and u wont have any trouble with plastic in the barrel. i bet .650's would be a good fit in ur 12 with WAA12 or FIG8's.....

I have full, modified, and improved tubes for the gun. I have the one that came as a full package with the tubes and the fifty barrel. I am leaning towards buying the mould for the Lyman waisted slug that is designed to be shot out of a trap wad. If not, then I may try your idea of a roundball in a wad to see how it shoots them.

with the modified, when i push the fiber cusion in, it squishes into a bit of a cup if im careful. perfect for the ball to sit on......

another thot.... with the .530 ball in the cup, if i use 50g 2f and then 60g 3f on top of the 2f, it pushes the little ball 1710fps!!! it wont do that with either straight 2f or 3f. 1600 was about as good as it would do with 2f alone.

1700fps is dang fast for a blackpowder gun!!! the lighter weight and larger "push area works to ur advantage if u can get it to work in ur gun

man, i wish i had a full choke for my gun!!

I have a trapper 12 like the add says. I bought it from Dixie a couple of years ago. I got it out and was looking it over. The barrel reads CVA gobbler 12 ga. The CVA box it came in said Trapper. The write up says chrome lined modified choke. The barrel is thick. So what do I have? It cost $235 new. I could not find a good used one at the time. Mark/Wi

The Gobbler is a thickwalled 12 guage that is full choke. I did not know it had a chrome bore, but that would not shock me. it was the last one made I think. It was made well into the steel shot years.

Try a 90/120 load of number sixes. I dropped mine at 40 steps this spring with that same load. Thick over powder nitro card and thin over with no cushion. Patterns great. I had to bend my barrel to get it closer to target since it shot real low. That load also kicks a bit. Mine has a polished barrel where yours is kind of a matte black. Very nice gun. Carry a short starter if you use the shot cups for steel or any other purpose. U can use it to drive the cup thru the choke by pushing against the bottom of the cup. Then just use another cup to get the right load of shot.
