Saw a .50 cal CVA flintlock rifle at a pawn shop today. Really tempted by the $99 price tag, but worried about a couple things, so it's still there.
First thing is that the touch hole is cone shaped, and the large end (towards the pan) is as wide as the channel in the pan where the powder sits. Now I don't know if this is how it came or not, but there's a significant amound of surface rust around the lock, so I figure whoever had it wasn't real good about cleaning it, and that worries me.
Also, it looks a bit like a kit gun, and I'm wondering about frizzon quality. Do these commonly need to be hardened?
Thanks for any help.

Put your hand over your wallet and run! Run as fast as you can and as far away from that Pawn shop as you can. Save that money and put it towards something that wasn't someone elses problem.

From my experience, CVA percussion guns can usually be made to shoot. The flintlocks I've had experience with, honestly, haven't been worth the trouble. If it was a percussion gun I'd think maybe. But not a CVA flintlock.

Good luck with it, whatever you decide.

hardening the frizzen is easy. My best sparker was a cva plainsman.

But with what you described, just walk away.

If the lock area is rusted some, then the bore is probably junk to. Sounds like a good one for some yuppie to hang over his fire place.

Alright, thanks for the advice.
I'll just stick that $100 into a future flintlock fund and wait for something better.
