I just got a St.Louis Hawken stock for an extra barrel I had. Everything fits good except the tang for the hooked breech. Did CVA make 2 different tangs? I does fit after some modifying, just not well. There is a slight gap between the breech and the tang, enough that the nipple is too far forward of the hammer. I emailed CVA but I got a reply that said I may not have an answer for 10 days.

Any help?

Thanks

Dixie will have it or Deer Creek when they open back up in a week.

I put together a Hawken kit from CVA back in 1983 that had problems also but it was a flintlock. The hook on the barrel didn't match up with the tang. I had to file it to make it fit. I also had a gap that I couldn't get rid of plus the touch hole didn't line up with the pan. What can I say CVA does'nt make a very good kit.
After several years I still have the rifle but I redid it 3 times. In that time I repaired a broken stock ,replaced the lock and set the barrel back to be inline with the pan. Plus I put a 32 caliber sleeve in the barrel and truned it in a small game rifle.
If I was you I'd work at setting the barrel back until you get things to line up. It's easier to work with the wood...Good Luck ..ssettle

CVA did make at least two different mounting styles. The button breech and the hooked breech. Have you tried removing all of it from the stock to see if it goes together OK that way? There could be wood back there that is impeding progress.

Took care of the wood part. I bought a CVA kit years ago that had a .50 and .54 barrel. Instead of switching back and forth, I decided to look for another stock. The tang with my stock doesn't look like the tang on this new (or older) stock. I worked on it a bit more with a file and got rid of the gap and the hammer clears the nipple. I guess the wedge pin will help to keep it in place?

Thanks for the replies.

A gun shop locally has a thoroughly trashed CVA Hawken. I have contemplated buying it and fixing it up. The only major item missing is the trigger guard. The barrel looks fairly crappy though.

If I had a spare barrel like you did, I would be on it!
