Picked up a nice horn but it still has the core in it. What's the best way to get it out? It's slightly loose and comes out about 1/2 inch before it hangs up.

If its dried enough that the core comes out an inch or two, just use some kind of HOOK- bend a coat hanger, fish it into the core, and pull it out. There will connecting tissue still in the horn, as well as some of the core, possibly.

But, it will smell better when you boil out the remainer with a bit of soap in the water if you aren't boiling the entire core!

Expect to be doing some scraping inside the horn with a long handled spoon, one way or another. If the horn has a severe curve, even that won't get all the tissues out.

I put some sand- about a handful will be enough- in a horn and swirled and shoot the horn back and forth, to abrade away tissues in the top of the horn around the curve where I could not see.[I covered the mouth of the horn with the palm of my one hand, to keep the sand in the horn during the shaking.] Small birdshot would do the same. A vacuum machine sucked the last of the sand and dead tissue out when I felt it was done.

I hope this helps.

Runnball is right on. I might add however, if you have a good marriage do it outside! And if ya don't, :idunno: ..

Run a wood screw into the core to use as a handle. You could boil it for a bit until it comes out (do this outside), wait a bit more for it to release by itself, or grab ahold of the screw and give it a yank (or a combination of all the above)...

Save the core ... The core of buffalo horns was pitty ... full of little holes... Lakota used those cores to paint. If you dip a core like that into liquid earth paint, it sucks up that paint and you can use it like a fountain pen to draw lines ... they used it to paint hides, shields etc...
Just my two cents ... :surrender:

Just screw-in a large eye screw and pull! If will come out. Then boil it a little and take a stiff bristled bottle brush and clean the interior out and let dry a few days before working on it!
