Hi James,
You really do great work in the style of a true black smith, I was wondering if you could tell me where you got your steel for your pomel and guard, I have thought of trying the steel from HOME DEPOT, WHADAYATHINK?
Freeloader.

Thanks all for the nice words.I been on a dagger kick I am trying to make certian type.I think I well try a gamblers next.ALright some stats nthen handle is pretty beefy piece of antler.

Blade Length. Just over 11 1/4 inches
Width.1 1/2 in.
Handle. 5 in .

Freeloader, I go to the fleamarket and buy files,Wagon wheels some are wrought iron and some are iron or steel.I sometimes trade for leaf springs.Where my Dad worked they had machines that set on coils spring. Most of the metal at a box store is mild steel,If you want to make a knife order your known steel it well be simpler.

Nice knife James. And I really like the guard and pommel. Needs one of Miss Tudy's sheaths  .
Freeloader, I happen to work at the Depot and the steel we carry is 1018, which is to low in carbon to make a knife, but, it does alright for practice forging or as guards or other furniture on knives...Bud

Hi James,
Got your e-mail, THANKS! So you think mild steel is to soft or something to make guards and pommels?I would not want to use that for a blade, but thought it would work good for guards, pommels and ferrels. WHATDA YA THINK? It is also easy to find I really am not a shopper anymore of shops and flea markets, kinda getting to be a home body in my old age.Oh ya thank you BUD for your very helpful info. If you work there you should know. Thanks.

Mild steel is fine for fittings. I use it all the time. Electrical conduit works good for ferrules. Just file off the galvanized finish. Packing box bands also make ferrules. They need to be silver brazed together, or wrapped and pinned in place.
