The NY Times reports today that Bill Hayes, 98, passed. He was the singer who recorded the big hit single, The Ballad of Davy Crockett. After seeing the show, the record producer Archie Bleyer decided that the theme, sung by a vocal group, had potential as a single. It was recorded at 10 O'clock at night in one track, one take, it was a hit. It was the best selling single in the country for five weeks, starting in March 1955. Fess Parker and Ernie Ford also did covers of it. (Hayes was a big soap star for many years.)
