I just finished up this horn yesterday. It is what I like to call a day horn. It is the size to carry enough powder for a hunt of one or two days. It is approximately 10 inches long from butt to spout including the butt plug. It features a hollowed out black walnut ********, an applied and pinned black horn spout, a lathe turned ebony spout plug and two staples for strap attachment.

How do you attach the staple on the spout? Does it go all the way through? It must eh?

Also.......is the spout staple on the top of the horn as you would carry it or does it go on the side?

Just two questions I've been wondering about.

Whoah

If you keep making those horns looking so great, you're going to make me look like a worthless hack

Very nice lathe work, and the scrimshaw is quite nice as well

Looks great, i take it you turned the big end in the layth also.

PP,

Yes, the butt plug is also lathe turned. Although this ******** is long, hollowed out and similiar to the southern beehive buttplugs, it is actually a design from Pennsylvania. York county horns and Bucks county horns had buttplugs similiar to this one.

Nice horn!Did you use dye to get the horn that color?

Halftail,

Yes, this horn was dyed to acheive the color. Because I was looking for an overall golden color, I used the old standyby, Aqua Fortis, to get the color I desired. THe AQ was used exactly like one would use it to color a maple gunstock. Wipe it on, let it dry and apply a heat source to bring out the color. It may take several coats to get the color desired.

Grey Wiskers and Ridge,

To install a staple on a horn I just drill two holes for the staple about .002" undersize until they break through into the inside of the horn. Then I pound the staple into the two holes, go inside the horn and bend over the legs of the staple that are protruding inside the horn. Actually you don't have to bend the staple legs completely over, but just bend them enough that the staple will not want to come out.

The powder horn strap is not attached to the staple so there is not any real pressure on the staple that would pull it out of the horn. The strap goes through the staple and around the horn. The staple is there to orient and balance the horn. If a staple wasn't used the horn would want to "roll" and not lay flat against a bag. When building a horn with turned areas in the throat of the horn rings are left on the horn at the balance point and are the point where a stap would be attached. On a horn like this with a plain throat the staple serves the same purpose as the turned rings.

Ridge,

I forgot to answer the second part of you question in my message above.

The staple is on the top of the horn, just off center of the balance of the horn. You install the strap through the staple, around the horn and sew it together. When done the strap lays against the side of the staple so that the strap is right at the balance point of the horn.

Here is a picture of a horn with the staple and strap installed:

Unbelievably beautiful detail on the scrim. I also like the idea you had for the staple on the side for the strap. Of course the horn is also great looking.

Randy,

Typical of your work is the fact that you took the time to get the design to work all the way around and look perfect. I've said this before about your efforts, but :hatsoff:

Very good looking horn.

Hardog, have you tried Potassium Perm. to get that type of color? Does it work as well as the AF? I haven't tried it yet on a horn, just wondering.

Dang, I need to get a lathe.

I'd love to attempt a horn like that.
