I'm not particulary soliciting advice, however, it is always welcome. Rather, I'm just taking break from making a deer antler powder measure and thought I would share my thoughts thus far. Basically, this is quite the pain in the rear. I just started about two hours ago and am still kind of figuring out my technique. I started by boiling the antler to soften it. Then I started using increasing larger drill bits to drill out my hole. I have then used a round file, dremel, pocket knife, screw driver and whatever else comes to mind to help widen out the hole. Needless to say, I'm breaking quite a sweat. I have always admired the beauty of a nice deer antler powder measure and thought I would try my hand at making a couple for my deer hunting friend and I. I will keep you posted on my progress.

Use 1 drill-bit (I use one that is about half the diameter of the SMALLER end of the horn where the bottom of the hole will be). Start the hole centered then start to wallow it out by angling the bit/drill. This will end up making a elongated cone-shaped hole. Smooth with a long, narrow knife blade by scraping (if needed).

With a little practice, this will make a pretty good hole that needs little smoothing. No need to boil if you will be drilling.

Thanks Blackhand,
A lot of times when I start something new it's trial and error. Always helps to get a little advice from someone who's already been there.

instead of boiling water, you could soak it in vinegar. seems to penetrate and soften better...at least thats been my experience.

I make pens, game calls, powder measures and other things from antler. Never has it occurred to me to pre-soften. I have to wonder why. :idunno:
Just pick yer drill and go at it. There are small rotary files that could be used in your drill. Although I have never felt a need.
Methinks you are overthinking the project. I think.
Are ye enjoying the smell yet? :haha:

:blah: its called patience! nothing hand made comes quick n easy, take yer time enjoy the challange and really enjoy what you end up with, each time you make another it will be easier and you will enjoy it more no matter what it is. Sweat is just the dollars you would have spent to buy it from somebody else. :rotf:

Gus is telling you correct!....It even works for straightening antler tips!

Well, I've completed one powder measure and I have to say I'm pretty pleased with it. I turned the corner when I started using the sanding bit on my dremel. Since this one is so nice, I'll likely give it to my buddy. Now that I've done one, I think the others will be easier and more enjoyable. Thanks for all the tips.

Smells pretty bad when it gets hot, doesn't it?

There are those that say don't breathe that dust.

I've made a half dozen of them,as for drilling I like to drill down the center as deep as I can with a 1/8 drill. Then redrill the hole again with bigger diameter drills until I get just a little more capacity than I want then trim back to size.Another tip I use is I draw a line bye eye as straight as I can with a pencil down the center of the antler tine. I do this twice ,from the first line I turn the tine 90 degrees and draw the second line with the pencil, use these two lines as reference to drill on center. OK guys it's late I got one more for ya as I said I like to use a small 1/8th drill first at some time yer gonna drill thru AHH. Don't panic driil it on thru and glue a 1/8 wood dowel, you could even use it as your final depth register then step up in drill dia until done.Above all folks be careful, I cal this place my learning channel.

Guys,
I'm gonna try and get the camera to work today. I really would like to show you what I've done and get some feedback. When I get back from church this afternoon, I will try and make it happen.
