hey guys i was gonna post this last weekend when i shot the deer but ive been bear hunting all last week and didnt have time. i tried and tried to get the bear with the muzzleloader but i couldnt make it happen and ended up taking my first bear ever with a 30-06. but there is always next year when i will try again with the muzzleloader and hopefully be successful.
anyway back to the deer hunt. i got up at 2:30 in the morning and made the 100 mile drive with a couple hunting buddies of mine to a spot where they deer hunt. i had missed 2 bucks the week before with my .54 and was anxious to have a try with my pedesoli 50 cal swivel gun. the morning hunt was slow and i didnt see any deer. we gathered for lunch and made a game plan. the deer werent moving at all so we would have to kick them up. we were hunting a big hollow. 3 guys were gonna still hunt along the side of the hollow and i was going to be in the bottom incase they pushed anything up.
i found a good spot where the deer traveled alot. the only problem was it was very thick and i would only be able to shoot 50 yards or so. anyway i was standing there leaning against a small tree when i heard something infront of me. i look over to see 6 does trotting down the side of the hollow 200 yards away..they were heading my way, and fast ! i rest the gun on the tree and got ready. they kept coming closer and closer. at 30 yards the lead doe looked up and saw me. they stopped and stared at me. i put the bead on the neck of the lead doe, said a prayer to the lord, and pulled the trigger. through the cloud of smoke i saw the doe limp away and try to run up a hill. half the way up she fell over backwards and slid down the hill ! i looked to see 2 does still standing there so i decided to try for another one. i looked down at the gun and thought the cap fell off the loaded barrel sense there was no cap on nipple. i put cap on, aimed at doe that was broadside at 25 yards, and pulled trigger. the cap went off but barrel didnt. i did this 3 times. then i looked at gun closer and i saw that i was so excited that i had forgot to rotate barrels, and had been snapping caps on the empty barrel :rotf: . i rotated barrel and took a quick shot but missed.
i walked down to where i shot the first doe and saw a nice blood trail. i could see the doe laying there dead but i decided to follow blood trail anyway. it sprayed out of her very well. i walked over and saw me trophy. a nice beautiful fat doe. i took a quick pic then gutted her.
while gutting here i saw that i had hit her right between shoulder and neck
and that the ball had blown right through her heart.
i drug her over 1/2 mile out of steep hollow to the truck. i was very very proud of her. it is my second deer with a muzzleloader and i really wanted to see how a .50 cal PRB would preform on a deer.
while skinning her i found the ball under the skin on her ham. it was a soft lead ball but it didnt expand really at all, infact i could probably reshoot it lol. the one on left is ball found in deer compared to one of left which is unfired.
it was an amazing hunt and i was very impressed with preformance of ball. the shot was around 30 yards and it made it completely long ways thru the deer. i will definetly keep using round balls. my grandpa who got me into this wonderful sport was very proud of me. i couldnt of asked for a better hunt. hopefully next year a bear will be taken down with my muzzleloader and a PRB ! cheers SS
