11/14/05 - .58cal Flintlock / round ball / another 10 pointer ”“ photos shortly
==========================================

This morning was quiet and mostly still black,
when I heard some leaves rustling and saw the buck’s back;

He was outlined against a very faint sky,
And I knew that I’d get but only one try;

He was walking real fast, then he stopped in the trees,
So I lifted the rifle up off of my knees;

All I could see was his neck and his head,
But at 35yds I knew this buck was dead;

I couldn’t bear to shoot this beautiful deer’s head,
So I decided to take the neck shot instead;

Because I had practiced so much and a lot,
I knew in my heart I could make this shot;

I set the rear trigger and took careful aim,
To be sure that I wouldn’t just make him lame;

The black English flint was knapped very sharp,
and the Goex erupted from a shower of sparks;

When the .58 roared and pushed me back too,
The Hornady ball flew ever so true;

As I touched off the shot and then strained to hear,
Which way he had bolted, was it far”¦was it near?

I heard no clatter, and no rustling of leaves,
No buck did I see racing off through the trees;

Did I drop him I wondered, for I could not see,
So I stood up to look, there he lay in the leaves;

His beautiful rack I could clearly see then,
I counted the points and they came up to 10 !

I looked at my Flintlock and thought “back in the day”,
they’d approve of my journey in learning their ways;

I must be living under a star...have never shot a 10 pointer in my life, and have now shot 2 in 7 days...photos being developed as I write this.

Reading that poem, it was like I was there! All's I can say is, "Way to go Roundball" (verse and 10 point) :hatsoff:

You ARE the man! A hunter, shooter and a poet united in one man who dwells under a bright star. Congats friend!

Bravo! :bow:
(BTW, what's your limit in NC?)

Thanks...(even a blind hog finds an acorn now and then, eh?)
:grin:

I get 4 buck and 2 doe tags for the part of the state that I hunt in

There is always the exception to every rule. I feel we are all brothers of the same feather. Ken, I haven't forgot that beautiful Turkey that you collected in them big New York mountains. And Bill,"Roundball", you have just hit the "powder ball lottery". Oh! Son...you ain't right.
