I shot a deer today but I can pull the HAIR OFF THE hide with my hands with no problem, This is a first for me, Do you boys think there is something wrong with it??

nothing wrong at all!
Most animals seem to lose hair pretty easy after being killed.

Hobbles, we'be been over this before...when you shoot road kills, do the same day they've been hit!

( :rotf: :rotf: :rotf: )

But seriously, tell us about your deer...details man...and congratulations again!

Hey Hobbles - Are you saying that you can pull alot more hair off than normal? If so you may want to talk to a Fish and Game biologist or a vet an ask them if there is anything going around that may cause your deer to lose hair like that. They may be able to give you an opinion on whether eating that deer is safe. I would want to be on the safe side. GC

I was thinkin the same but the farther I can stay away from the fish cops the better, no reason, just how I feel, Now regular cops used to stop by my place all the time when I lived out west, But even there,,, no fish cops,
again,, no reason,,, just the way of it,,,

I would say if the hair has to be pulled fairly hard to come out its OK. But if it come out real easy, then I would contact the DNR. In Minnesota a friend of mine shot a deer that they thought had mange. It just didn't look good when he shot it. The DNR was called and they took the deer to test it. They gave him a permit to shoot other. He later found out it was tested ok. He did get another deer.

Perfect shot my man...looks like you and that Hawken are a good match...congratulations on a fine shot!

I agree with guncobbler. We here in MO have had black tounge pretty bad. Definately check with you conservation office.

Nice touch to have the Muzzleloading Forum bumper sticker right below the deer! :hatsoff:

Deer putting on winter coats and loosing the summertime hair is usually earlier than now, especially up where you are. This is triggered by a thing called phototrophism and deals with the angle of the sun and the amount of ultraviolet rays,if I remember correctly. If you haven't had any good cold weather yet, though,it could be a normal thing.I would strongly suspect the meat is OK unless you found anything else that looked suspicious like bleeding sores, infected lesions or bleeding from ears, nose, anus, etc.

I picked up a fresh roadkill fox squirrel the other day thinking I'd get it mounted for my office, but it was in the middle of it's fall time molt and the hair fell out as you described.
