THE WOODS OF S.C.
our deer season here in SC started yesterday, i will probably go in the morning. we have the longest deer season in the country, maybe, on private land it goes from Aug. 15-jan1 we can also hunt with any centerfire or muzzleloader or bow or handgun. mostly i will try to flintlock hunt this year,,,,,,,,,,,,,

yep, i just came in the house from my range in my back yard. i was shooting my 40 SMR at the distance of my woods i hunt. 85 steps, i have it zeroed at 50yds. at 85 i am about 5in low with 55gr. of 3f so i know where to hold it on the deer, i usually use my 54 but this year i am going to try and take a few with the 40, we also bait with corn here so most times you know where the deer will come out so that helps.

Thinking I'll do the same with my .40 Kibler. Maybe take the Colt 1851, 44 too. Just in case I get surrounded by rabid armadillos. Are you taking any backup?
i read a story on a forum, can't remember where. a fellow took his caplock rifle and his 36 cal. cap revolver. he shot a deer down and it was still moving so he whipped out the pistol and shot the deer between the eyes, the ball bounced back and wacked him on the shin bone! he was hopping around and yelling! LOL!!

Fellas not trying to insult anyone’s intelligence here nor am I trying to be a Debbie Downer but, Cap & Ball revolvers won’t fly for ML season here. Got to be at the minimum a Single shot .50 in a 9” barrel with a 250 conical or heavier or .54 or larger PRB with same length barrel or longer. So I guess just take it as a friendly reminder to check those game laws. Don’t want any of you fine peeps getting in any trouble. 👍

Early season for sure, Our archery season starts I believe mid Sept. ( not a stick slinger ) so thats out besides to warm and to many snakes and ticks out and about for me. Early muzzle loader season mid Oct. I have seen warm weather and cold weather during this hunt. So its dice throw there, Regular rifle late Nov. And then late muzzle loader running into Jan. Good luck and hustle when ya get one on the ground.

I’m not 100% on this and currently don’t have the regs handy, but I do believe our bighorn sheep season opens soon up here in a few of our units. I’m not a sheep hunter and can barely climb the house stairs anymore!!

" To hunt deer in Alabama Muzzleloaders and Black Powder Handguns must be a minimum of .40 caliber or larger.

Muzzleloaders of any caliber may be used to hunt: Bobcat, Groundhog, Unprotected Wildlife, Fox, Coyote, Feral Swing & Other Game Birds or Animals other than Deer."

Pretty simple here. The bureaucrats have managed NOT to screw this up YET.

Yeah,
I do a lot of flood work and often I work with all kinds of law enforcement. I was talking to a Game Warden and we were discussing the up coming season (2011) and I made mention that I picked up a new .50 flint pistol. Told him I was looking forward to having it with me cuz there have been many times I had a doe right there in my Lap. He was cool about everything, just let me know what was up with the regs and all.

I just checked and apparently things have changed since 2011,

I stand corrected.

Florida Bow season is probably open in the southern zone now. Don't hunt it anymore but you haven't lived until you are sitting up in a tree with a Florida thunderstorm cracking all around. By the way these are the small deer that people talk about as Florida deer. Get north of Orlando and they are the same as deer anywhere else in the Southeast

about 5 years ago they brought to our state the crass deer tags. they let you "transport" 3 bucks with those tags and 5 does, i think. they are a joke! up until that there was no limit on how many bucks you could kill. it is all about money! i usually kill about 7-8 deer a year. i give a lot of meat to older folks and women. the thing is all the old boys here just take the transport tag off the deer when they get it home or processor and use it again! the tags are not turned in or checked. it is a bunch of foolishness! we are overrun with deer. as many as are killed and as long as our season is the deer thrive!

I also live in SC, and I think the deer season is way too long. Soon there won't be any left. I know people that take multiple deer just because they can and they like killing things, not because they need the meat etc. It is a old hold over from days gone by that should be changed.(IMHO):dunno:

Do you actually think "baiting" deer is hunting? Do you really want a deer that bad? What ever happened to actual "hunting", like slow walk, still hunting, etc?

Baiting deer is illegal here in South Dakota, so I don't do it. However, before you criticize hunting methods others use because they don't meet your ethical standards, you should consider their situation. I am 74 years old. I have PAD in my legs. Walking much over 100 yards without resting is extremely difficult for me. I don't bait deer here since it is illegal but I also obviously cannot, and do not, "slow walk", "still hunt" etc. ALL my deer hunting is done from a blind or treestand. I consider this fair chase hunting. The only difference I see is that I have to predict where the deer will be without the use of bait. That is not difficult to do since I live in the country and see deer on our property every day. If bait were legal here, I MIGHT use it. I love hunting and don't think I should have to give it up just to satisfy what someone else considers "ethical".

You have to satisfy it for yourself, and listening to you, I do not think that you really believe "baiting" is ethical. We all have physical issues. You do not change the rules/ethics because of it. I hunted NW Penna. Rugged, snow, cold. I always hunted from a position on the ground, behind a huge natural blow down root ball, that i had a little niche in, where i could sit, not have to worry about getting shot in the back, and had some protection from the wind etc.It created a natural blind of sorts. I would sit & sit, nary a movement, and sooner or later that deer would walk by! There were a few time when I got up to take a leak, that there were deer prints 10 ft behind where i sat, and i never heard them! I just laughed and went back to my sitting! I was successful most years but not all, but always had a wonderful time just being in the "game".
