I have purchased a pedersoli harpers ferry model 1816. The man who defarbed it redated it as an 1819 but double stamped the 8. Everytime I look at it it gets on my nerves. I need someone who can repair this. A man with a shop in Harpers Ferry, where I live, won't do it. Who would you all suggest? Any help is appreciated.

What about the man who defarbed it, is he still alive?

If so, he should stand behind his work and repair it for free.

Perhaps a local gunsmith could fix the double stamp...

I don't know that it can be fixed. Just depends on how deep both the stampings are. If the part you don't want to see is light, it might be draw filed out & removed that way. However, trying to put the metal back in the screw up is hard to do. I have peened places back with a small hardened tool punch & filled voids that are minor inclusions, but getting it not noticable would take some real intense work, if it can be done at all. A browned barrel would be the easiers to hide this repair on.

I'm ignorant about the appearance of this model. Where is the date stamp located?

If it is on the lock, I might be able to fix it for you.

let me know,

Tom
