The question ofmy Dry Lubrication has always been questioned with a Yabut
Ya it works great but how would it work if the gun were loaded during hunting season but not fire for a few days before Bambi came along as a target.
Well Dave K and I have conducted an experiment.
People have asked me this question for some years and I always thought a rifle could be loaded and shot a few days later with the same results as when loading and shooting the same day?
Now this will seem rather dumb but Dave K who has a great ability in following direction Cleaned his rifle and fired 5 shots at a target and got a nice tight group.
Then he cleaned the rifle again and loaded in the same suggested manner and thenPut the rifle in his garaged and waited 4 or 5 days before firing another five shots.
Who'd a thought of that way of testing a practice?
He got the very same grouping as he had the preceding few days.
The answer is obvious. Using the damn near Dry patch method can give the same accuracy after a few day's delay between loading and firing as fresh loading and firing the same day.
I haven't been too busy on the Forum of late as I I have been concentrating on staying alive.
When you have a question about anything
Developef an experiment to enlighten yourself and later on the rest of the Forum.

Good to see you, @Dr5x, back to posting.

You have proposed a good test and an experiment to provide results that can be measured against a starting observation. I would have predicted similar results.

The proof of course is done by repeated testing to determine if the results can be repeated. There may be differences due to relative humidity getting to the charge. I would be very interested in a plot of the position of the first shot after storage. Was the nipple or touch hole plugged to prevent a path allowing moisture to enter through the flash channel?

I purchased your ebook and have been using your “dry” patch with good results. As I am new to traditional muzzleloaders the book was and is very helpful.

I am trying different mixes, with three different patch thicknesses. Another variable is the amount of powder.

I am hoping to find a “ballpark” patch thickness and lube mix first before I experiment with the charge.

Thanks again for a great resource!

I SHOULD HAVE STRESSED STORING THE LOADED RIFLE IN THE GARAGE WHERE ITB WOULD BE SUBJECT TO VARYING TEMPERATURES AND HUMIDITY.
APPARENTLY NOTHING ENTERED THE BARREL ENOUGH TO AFFECT THE POWDER CHARGE.
THE GROUP SECURED AFTER THE SEVERAL DAYS STORAGE WAS POSSIBLY A TAD BETTER THAN THE PRE EXPERIMENT FIRING.

YOU ARE WELCOME TO REPEAT THE EXPERIMENT KEEPING THE ENVIRONMENT AS VARIED AS YOU LIKE EXCEPTING RAIN OR SNOW.
