Dixie Tennessee Mountain Rifle

i have a chance to buy a .50cal Dixie Gun Works Tennessee Mountain Rifle,would anyone happen to know the barrel rate of twist for these rifles,the only markings on the barrel is the company name,also does anyone here own one of these,if so is a good shooter ect.

If the person selling will indulge you, you can put a tight patch on the cleaning jag and run the patch all the way down. Mark your rod and slowly pull it out. When the rod has made one full turn you know the twist by measuring the rod. If the turn will not allow for a full turn, you can measure a quarter turn.

David, In the Dixie catalog it says the rate of twist in that .50 caliber barrel is one turn in 56". I've seen several shooter using the Dixie Tennessee Rifles and they do very well with them. Le Grand

1 in 56 twist, and if you can get it for what you consider to be a fair price, jump on it. I had one with the heavier 15/16 barrel and it was a great shooter. I had a builder put in a banan-style patchbox to cover the grease hole and it looked great! Took several deer with it. Like a fool, I traded it towards a Mac-90 back in the "assault rifle" ban craze and have kicked myself for it ever since. If you are real lucky, you have found one of the earlier ones with a 7/8th barrel. They are less muzzle heavy and handle like nobody's business! :thumbsup:

They are fine rifles, I have 2 a .50 and a .32 flint guns. They were made in Japan. Both of my rifles are retired to the wall. I used the .50 for shooting matches after about 3,000 Rds. the barrel was worn out. The barrel and the lock parts are soft. If you just want to hunt with it and some target shooting it will serve you well.

I bought mine from Dixie in 1980. have no idea of how many rounds I have put through it, and it still shoots great. B. P.

I have a buddy who reenacts from the Korean War back to the French and Indian War. He has several rifles including a Dixie which he claims is the most accurate rifle he has. You could do worse and if the price is right it would be hard to beat.

Another vote in favor of the Dixie TMR. I have a left handed .50 flinter, and it does a fine job, despite the nut behind the trigger. I guess Dixie is going to quit selling them, or only sell kits, which is too bad. You have to spend a lot more money go find something as good.

JMHO, YMMV, (other caveats as required).

well i purchased it today at a local gun show for $300.00, the ramrod is broke and it needs cleaned up a bit but the barrel looks great and the stock is in good shape to.i also bought the .32 caliber one that was here in the classifieds also a very nice rifle, i think i"m gonna like um.

If you got if for 300 bucks and all that was wrong was a broken rammer and it needed cleaned up, then you found yourself a real bargain. Congratulations!
