I currently have a .32 caliber flintlock Dixie Tn Squirrel rifle that I'm considering converting to .45, 50 or .54 with a drop in barrel. Looking for suggestions especially from anyone who has done the same? All responses appreciated.

If it's like my Dixie Mountain rifle in 32, it has a very thin barrel. I don't remember off hand the diameter but one of those bigger barrels won't fit the stock. Maybe the 45 but I think that's a big maybe. If it works out, you are truly a Lucky Man.
Price wise buy another gun cheaper imho

barrel barely big engouh for a 50 cal. so forget the 54. new barrel will cost the same as another rifle.
I wouldn't do it. Deer season is how long? Squirrel season is months long and they to me taste better than venison, which is maybe a month.
Buy another rifle and keep something for small game. They're fun and challenging. Well, any hunting with a ml is fun, but you'll probably get more opportunities with a .32 than you'll get with a .50. A barrel will cost you, too, and I would imagine fitting a bigger barrel wouldn't be cost effective. IIRC, which isn't worth much.

Welcome to the forum. DO keep the .32 and get a bigger gun later. I shoot my .32 and .36 more than any others. But the .45 gets shot the most after those two.

Welcome to the forum. I must agree with the majority here. The Dixie Tennessee Mountain Rifle in .32 cal is a nice rifle that has been out of production for some time now. Do yourself a favor and hang on to it. It will be fun (and cheap!) to shoot.
There are plenty of .50 and .54 cal rifles around. At a local ML club you will find a number of them, both factory and semi custom, in pretty good shape in the $200-$700 range. Also check the online auctions. Btw, if you ever want to sell that Dixie .32 just post it in the Classified Ads-Auctions section. It won't last long! Good luck. - John

.32's just for plinking, is reason enough. Or.... crank it up for rabbits or other small critters.

Good choice to leave it as a .32 caliber. I have one and they are good shooting squirrel rifles. Save up and buy a bigger caliber. :thumbsup:
