TOTW has an English Officers' Fusil built by Dr. Gary White. I am interested in asking him to build a similar flintlock for me, but do not know what his quality of craftmanshift is.

If he is recommended highly, how do I contact him?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thx! :hatsoff:

I have 2 of his unmentionables. I have seen his rifles and he does very nice work.
Google white rifles

His craftsmanship is the best there is. I asked him a couple years ago how many rifles he has built (excluding the Green River Rifle Works and White Muzzleloading, which he started and owned). He said, "Oh, couple thousand." He builds more styles than I ever knew existed.

Yes, agree with Herb.

Doc White's rifles are pretty much "top of the shelf" stuff.

Don't know if/how much he is still building as far as "historical" guns go.

He is also into building contemporary muzzle loaders for speed and distance using uber-long conicals which seems to be the subject of his more recent works.

Seeing Gary White usually has a few M:ers for sale on TOW's consignment sales, came to the conclusion that he must have "hired help". For one builder to produce that many MLers is nearly impossible. Also he must have a few modern machines that enable him to produce that many MLers.

TOW's share of a sale is 33% and to continually sell MLers through TOW doesn't lend itself to making money....unless Gary White has a "special agreement" w/ TOW.

Not criticizing Gary White at all.....just curious as to how he can make a living after paying TOW's percentage...or does he have other income derived from his profession?.

I know nothing about the quality of his MLers, but they do seem to sell.....Fred

The top rifle is a Doc White piece. Don't really have a good picture.

Basically a TOW Edward Marshall Rifle kit with an open trigger guard, incised carving and engraving.

It's probably representative of anything in its price range. Not flawless by any means but good work. Been using it rather extensively for awhile, target, trail walks and hunting.

Dr. Gary White is a gastroenterologist (a gut-man). He used to work 100 hours a week but now is down to about 40. He needs only 5 or 6 hours sleep a night, so he has a lot more hours than most people. He builds all those rifles himself in a small shop (about like a double garage) in his back yard. I don't remember his power tools, but probably a drill press, maybe a milling machine and lathe and grinders and belt sanders. His son, James, also a doctor, told me that his dad builds up to 20 rifles at a time, maybe all different schools, whatever strikes his fancy. He does all of one step on all the rifles in sequence, such as fitting the entry pipes. With his passion for building, he could never market all these rifles except through some place such as Track of the Wolf.

This is Doc White and me in May 2013 when I visited his shop with a friend who had bought his long-lost Leman rifle. This is my Bridger Hawken in the early stages.

Here Doc is in his shop stamping my Bridger with "S Hawken St Louis". Shows about half of his shop.

Here is my Bridger (with its barrel 2" shorter than the original, thus the shorter forend) with Doc's pattern of the original Bridger Hawken stock, accurate to 1/16 inch. This shows some of his stock blanks and barrels soon to be built.

I have a 50 flint Henry rifle built by Gary White that I bought through TOW. The craftsmanship is ok but the trigger pull is way too heavy. I don't know what to do about it so I just live with it. It's accurate enough for my tastes but the hard pull takes some getting used to.

Thanks one-and-all for your responses.

I did contact TOTW, they said they don't have any contact information...HHhhhmmmmmmm :hmm: that is why I am a part of this forum. Here, I get excellent information and advice.

Doc white never hired help. He was a retired MD the guns were not for income.
