As the thread title asks, wondering if anyone knew what this type of needle is called. I had tried searching Google with a number of different terms and came up empty.

Looks like a French eyeless needle. Also known as a split or spring eye, but it is slightly different.
Just an educated guess.

Wow, thank you all for the quick replies! I have found them to be excellent for leather use with artificial sinew and waxed thread. I have about a dozen of them but never knew what they were actually called. The wealth of knowledge here never ceases to amaze!

I use lacing needles when making archery and other leather gear. Tandy has a style with a hollow threaded back end. You screw the lace in. Work pretty good. Never saw one like your picture. Would like to get a couple to try.

Leather lacing needle - I bought them from Tandy. Work OK for leather lace...

Back in the days I was learning leatherwork at my dad's elbow, he taught me a useful trick. He put a dab of rubber cement on the scived end of the lace prior to mounting it in the needle. I lost interest in lacing several decades back, but if pressed to do so today I'd be cracking the lid on my can of rubber cement (actually Barge).
