couldn't afford real nice, so i caved and went to the first thing i could afford. I picked up a CVA 12 gauge, "gobbler series" with a fixed choke that measure right in between a imp and a mod. the guy said if i didn;'t like the way it shot i could return it. i got it for $275 which seemed reasonable to me, but i can't find a single thing on these guns. it is a percussion, with a beautiful carving of a tom in full strut and two feathers. real nice looking octogon to round barrel. should be perfect for beating the brush with. did i pay too much? it was on the r ack for $300, so i got him to do 275, plus take a bunch off all the other stuff i bought. the gun probably really cost $240 including the "package" deal he did for me.

I've never had one, so I don't know. I would say that any sidelock BP shotgun that is in decent shape is worth that amount of money easy. I own one muzzle loading percussion sidelock single barrel in 28 gauge. I found it at a yard sale for $50.00. It's not much to speak of but it shoots!
The money they want for shotguns today is out of this world. :shake:
I'm not willing to spend big bucks on a shotgun when I shoot mostly rifle.
It seems that there are no longer any entry level BP sidelock shotguns being offered in the U.S. and I refuse to pay big bucks for something Jed Clamppit would have carried.
I don't believe it cost that much to make a basic shotgun and a profit, when they can produce quality rifles at much less.
I've taken tree rats and bunnies with mine.
I would have taken the gun that you bought and considered it a good deal.
End of rant. ANY PICS ?

If you like the way it shoots you've done well.
Now you get to enjoy the process of working up loads that work good.

heres the pics, shoots great after filing the bead down a touch to raise POI- shooting 70 grains of 2f, with 110 grains of 7 1/2 for crows http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p38/armymedic2/blackpowder002-1.jpg http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p38/armymedic2/blackpowder003-1.jpg http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p38/armymedic2/blackpowder001-1.jpg

i forgot to mention that i got the gun from Taylor and vadney. they seem like real nice folks, and i would do business with them again. They keep a really clean shop, and were willing to haggle with me on all items my brother and i bought. good guys.
