Hi guys. I need alittle helpfinding some information on a side by side that I might purchase. Its an English double with the name of Geo. Fisher on the lock plate. It also says laminated steel barrels. Ive looked on the internet to no avail. Any info will be helpful.

Even searches may not turn up much. These English doubles were imported by the boatload. Often the names on the shotguns were labeled for the eventual retail seller and do not hint at the maker. Terms like "laminated steel" "London twist" and more were used for marketing and don't always give an accurate story about the way the gun was made or it's quality. Although, I believe, laminated would mean just that, a damascus type of manufacture. Generally, these English doubles do not have high value, there are a lot of them around. But, it is possible you have something special. Dunno :idunno:
Seeing it would help.

If you look at some on the auction sites you will notice some of them look alike, but have different names. Seems back in the 1800's you could get gunsmiths in England to make you a bunch of these guns and have them put your name on the locks or the name of your Hardware store. Dont know if this is true or not, but it seems plausible.
If they are solid, not rusted and work good mechanically they ususally shoot and handle very good and you can tell they were finely made guns at one time. On some you have to put oversize nipples in them that you can chase the old threads with to tighten things up there and some need work on the tumblers in the locks.

Good luck

Stockel lists 5 George Fishers:-

London 1640-64
London 1660-95
Washington 1803-05
Harrison Co, Or 1808-1819

London 1825-29 52 Upper North Place,Gray's Inn Road.

The real question is, does it have London or Belgian proof marks?

Americans did not trust any shotgun that was not twist. Bob Spencer has a splendid early Colt shotgun with the twist painted on :hmm:
