Draw filing

i am getting close to completing my TC Hawken kit. I have not assembled a muzzle loader in more than 30 years, as life got in the way. However, I am thoroughly enjoying this kit, which was given to me by a neighbor. I have assembled two percussion pistols, and a Navy Arms double barrel shotgun before this.

I am draw filing the barrel at present. I have done a lot of browsing in the Forum archives on this subject. One thing I have noticed is that many feel that the finish of the barrel does not have to be perfect, if browning the barrel-which I am planning to do. Reading these threads, it appears to me that browning will cover up slight marks on the barrel. I have been using 180 grit sandpaper and mill files. there are still some faint marks on one of the flats.

question: should I keep filing, or will the browning solution cover up or mask these faint marks?

I am committed to keep filing, just curious about the effects of the Laurel Mountain Forge cold browning solution on these faint marks. They feel completely smooth, and appear to be oxidation marks from the milling process.

After all of the milling marks are gone, use maroon scotchbrite to blend the finish.

I have also lightly sandblasted barrels before browning. I think it looks really good, others disagree.

One thing that is counterproductive is over polishing. Go no finer than 320 grit.

Mark’s will show.. especially perpendicular marks stand out, seemingly moreso than lengthwise marks...

Wow, didn't know the kit barrels were not finished. Only kits I have done were CVA and those barrels were ready to go. Yes keep draw filing until those marks are gone and then smooth sand it. 185 is a good final grit if you are going to brown it.

I’ve had my best luck with browning and bluing with file -150 grit

Browning or bluing will makes the marks show up more, not cover them. So get the barrel as smooth as you can.

Thanks everyone! I went back and removed all those marks by drawfiling and sanding. Hopefully will get it browned soon.
I did stick a hot pad, and water filled pot in basement powder room. Test run shows heat and lots of humidity. Think I am set!
