Picked up a couple wool blankets from a thrift store, the white to cream multi stripe, similar to Hudsons Bay 4 Point. Problem is they have spots on them not real dark but noticeable. Thinking a medium brown dye. Any help out there would be appreciated. What type dye and best process.
Thanks,

twocross, why worry about a couple little stains, after sleeping under them in the rain n snow in the woods a couple times ya won't be able to tell where the stains were anyway :blah: .This ain't no fashion show, use em abuse em let them get a good patina  . YMHS Birdman oh yea, that white/cream color is very time period correct for what we do, personally I'd just leave em alone n use em

I've dyed them before in a large butchering kettle. I used a walnut dye that I added some copper fittings to. It made them a very vivid copper color.

Other than that, my only advice is that if you go with RIT dye then don't use just one color. IMHO it always looks like RIT dye if you do. Mix a little red and orange...or brown and black. Just enough to make it a color that you won't see on the box. It looks better that way.

Birdman, I was hopin to dye them and end up with a good enough job to give them as a gift to a friend. I do thrift stores on weekends and in the past 6 months have picked up around 15 blankets that are either Whitney, Early, or Hudson Bay
3 1/2 or 4 point. Also have aquired 10 more that are not point blankets but are correct for the fur trade period. Some I use and some I just admire.

We really need to get to know each other... :rotf:

Man......I keep trying to find such treasures but all I can find are over priced Hudson Bay blankets, in the wrong colors!

My wife and I have been dying white blankets with osage orange wood shavings. It comes out just like the wood (golden to butterscotch) and is very "set"- does not wash out. I add about a quart of the shavings per gallon of water, boil half an hour, strain out the dye, and stir the blanket in for 10 minutes or so. Wash in cold water and it's done.

Anything is possible, but there is a half a country between your camp and mine. so for now :snore:

My wife says you can dye them but the spots will dye darker. Soo if you dye them a medium brown the spots will be a dark brown.
She is an expert on wool. Raises wool sheep, wool goats(angora), cuts thier fleece by hand cleans and processes the wool, makes yarn and felt projects for sale and dyes them in various colors.

You can get dies here:

that are used in cold water and come in a very wide varieties of colors that can be mixed to produce just about any shade you'd like. I have a project on the shelf for which I bought some olive and brown cold water dye in hope of producing an old WWI kakai color on a tarp tent. I'll have to get it done when it warms up and I can work outside. (No room in the hovel for more.)
