Hi All:
I have a Ruger Old Army SS but have never owned a Musket. With out dropping too much $ what are the brands I should look for in a Traditional looking musket and what are their price range.
Also what else should I get with it like a Range Rod ect.
Thanks in advance!

Well,

"Musket" spans the time frame from at least 1650 to the 1860's.

Your Ruger is a hybrid of classic cap-n-ball revolvers of the 19th century, so are you in the market for something from that time period or do you want something earlier in history in flintlock, or farther back in matchlock?

Assuming that you are thinking in line with your revolver..., the cheapest that I know if is a Dixie Gun Works Springfield. You might find less expensive used muskets on some of the gun auction sites.

What do you mean when you say musket. Some times people say musket for any muzzleloading long arm. Musket means a military gun. A civilian gun siular to a musket was called a fusil or a fowling piece, Although we might say fowler today. These guns were smoothboared like a shot gun.Rifles were invented in the 16th century and became very popular in centrel europe and later in america. A good copy of a musket, fusil or rifle can be pricy. Some of todays rifles like the lymen great plains rifle are cheaper and have a traditional look. Some other gus like traditions rifles tried to keep the basic look but have drifted away by a good piece to make it less expensive. Guns made in India are a lot cheaper then better copies but have problems in the fit and finnish that gets under the skin of traditionalist. However many own them, use them in reinactment and hunting with out a hitch.

Shooting isn't everybody's thing. She might be willing to try one at an enraged Coor's can, but let her choose her time. My dad was fond of saying, "If everybody liked the same thing, all cars would be black."

My wife of 25 years (congrats to me AND HER) out shot me with a 30-06 when she first got an elk tag! Women can shoot for sure. I consider myself a pretty dang good shot too!

Can be a mixed blessing. Whilst we had a large family at home and needed the meat she would go hunting with me all the time and it was good but for that one thing! If your wife hunts with you and your buddies do not get out as much!

Now the kids gone and she not shown interest until this year and wants to go again. Xmas 2013 found a hunting license in her stocking and we apply for a cow tag together again!

She did shoot a cow elk once with a .50 caliber. Was the biggest cow i ever saw. Was standing by the herd bull ad was notably bigger. We got 333 lbs of BONELESS meat outta that cow. She still waiting for me to top her LOL
