The weather is better, supposed to be in the mid 70’s today after being in the teens the last several days.

I recently got into black powder guns and acquired this .40 cal and hopefully will shoot a few balls through her later.

Only have 3 and 4F powder along with some Hornady rb’s to try out.

I just read another post of yours about the loads you were experimenting with, think they answered my question. Before the cold weather set in I was experimenting with a .390 RB , .15 patch, 35 grains. I noticed an old Dixie Gun Works catalog recommended a .395 RB , for the Dixie Cub,will experiment with that next.

I just traded for a Turner Kirklin 40 cal full stock yesterday and will soon order some round balls for it and seems I may need some other than .390 do any of you have one of these and could you tell me what was recommended for these rifles

I use both 2f and 3f in my 32 and 40 and see no noticable difference in shot placement, performance or shot consistency from one to the other.
If I was a better shooter I might notice a difference but my shooting meets my hunting criteria.

I was just using 2f in my Kibler 40 yesterday. I shot tighter groups with the 2f from a seated position. Plan is to go back out and try it offhand and see if the slower burning powder will effect group size or placement.

I was just sawing and grinding away at this new walnut slab , trying to make a new stock , dusty shaping with a flap disc , major roughing it out , just trying to save a old flintlock from becoming a relic .

Heres my 40 cal. “Frankenstein” rifle. Why Frankie. A curly maple stock traded for 20 years ago, a Dixie gunworks Kirkland barrel, L&R Durs Egg lock, TC trigger and trigger guard and TOTW ramrod pipes, ramrod and butt plate. Stained with black walnuts dried husks soaked in water about 6 months. Sighted in and will be shot next week in Jacksonville with the “Treaty Oaks Muzzleloaders” group.

My .40 is a close copy of the southern style William Bean rifle. 1 in 66 twist, .395 RB, 10 thous. patch and 65 grains of 3F for my hunting load for deer. I use it mostly for target shooting. Comfortable and light to carry.

I have 4 in 40 caliber all percussion guns
1. Charles Caywood under hammer target pistol
2. An original J Withers over under 40 cal rifled barrel and .600 smooth bore Mule eared side lock percussion.
3. Thompson Center Hawken I built from parts Green Mountain barrel.
4. One I put together from parts <AMR> stock 16 1/2 in barrel buggy rifle.
All shoot very well with 50gr fffg Goex .12 patch .395 rb RWS 1075 caps.
