One of the guy that I work with came to me today and asked if I'd be interested in his old F I E Kentucky rifle. He's said that he hasn't fired the gun in 10 years and it's hung on the wall for at least that long. The gun is in .45 cal percussion rifle. He says it's in great conduction. He's asking about $100.00 for it.

I've never heard that FIE make or imported muzzle loader. All I know of FIE is the cheap .22's and .25's you see in pawn shops.

Is what quality is this rifle? :idunno:

I have a .45 cal FIE Ky rifle. It had not been fired before I got it. Cleaned up like new.It is sturdy, has a musket style lock. The rifeling is deep and rough. It cuts patches so I lapped the barrel with valve lapping compound. It helped. It may never shoot with better quality rifles. Its fun to shoot and well worth the $70 I paid for it. If I find someone that wants a nice looking wall hanger I may double my money.

For $100. I would take the chance. But would offer less. "Make sure the rifle is not loaded" Give it a good looking over and see if he will let you shoot it. Check to make sure the nipple can be taken out and the threads in the bolster are decent. Use a bore light if you have one to check the condition of the bore.

Ditto what Linc said. A local gun shop had one of them for sale for $100 but the bore was rusted and pitted. I pulled the rusty patch from the bore, dropped in my bore light and told the owner of the shop "NO THANKS". Otherwise the lock and stock were in good shape. I would have bought it if the bore was in good shape.

If it is in good condition I'd go for it. They are good shooters. Agreed, get it for as little as possible.

I have one of those. It is the first ML that I bought. That was 1972 when I was 15 years old. I shot it for many years, sold it to my brother, and only recently re acquired it. In fact, I hope to shoot it this week, the first time in 20 years! I'd buy another for $100 in a heartbeat.

Hi my little brother recently bought one these F.I.E Kentucky 45 cal for $50 dollars from a pawnshop and we were woundering where to find more information on these rifles .what's the barrel twist ? Anyone have any good recommendations for barrel maker to swap the barrel but keep it still octagonal?

You can and should do a self-check, but the F.I.E. caplock .45's were often 1:48 as the barrels often came out of Italy, but for some reason they sometimes with that twist rate shot round balls a lot better. Perhaps some came with slower twist barrels from Spain? Anyway, no reason to do anything to the barrel on such an inexpensive gun, other than getting it reamed out to .50 IF and only if there is too much rust damage to your bore.

Drop a AAA battery down the bore and shine a flashlight on it. This will let you see the condition of the bore. good rifles.
