After final sanding of the wood, I used wrapped the wood with wire leaving about a 3/16 in gap between the wires. Then using a propane torch, with about a 1" flame, holding the flame about 1/2 " or less from the wood. I carefully schorched the wood untill it was almost black but not burnt. Doing one side heavier than the other tapered the stripes. It took me a few tries to get it right. Then remove the wire, and lightly wipe off the wood with fine steel wool. Carefull or it will remove the stripes. Then finish as normal. Wrapping the wire uneven, and leaving the kinks in seemed to improve the looks some. I'm real pleased with the outcome, and am now working a stock to stripe this weekend.
