I have a couple of raw horns stashed away that I picked up at a dusty little ML shop here and there, and I know all the usual suspects (Dixie, Track, etc.) sell horns, along with Moscow Hide and Fur, etc. We used to have a tallow plant in this county with big old stinky barrel full of cattle horns for 50 cents each, but it has closed. Where else are you fellas finding your raw horns?

Many Honers get their raw horns from powderhornsandmore.com ___The days of getting raw cow horns from your local meatlocker or Rendering plant is all but gone, due to the mad cow disease problem and the fact, that the American Cattle Breeder Associations and Meat Packing Industry discourage buying and selling horned cattle, due to animal injury during transportation and confinement. There are some horned breeds still out there, but far and few between!

A big portion of the common cow horns we see in the black powder shops and powder horns we see in sportng good outlets are imported varietie from Africa, India and Mexico. These are usually high glossed to thin or to much solid tipped for making good powder horns and Horners usually shy away from these.

A good portion of the cost of a custom powder horn from any Honer, is the cost of the raw horn, he or she has to pay for the raw horn that they have to start working with. It is common to pay upwards to $50-$60 for a mostly white scrimshaw grade exlarge raw horn!
