I just got my first flat brim felt hat for the pre 1840 longhunter. I was wondering if it would be ok to spray some sealent on it to waterproof it. I dont know if the weather will trash a felt hat? Any help would be appreciated.

Depends on the felt. Wool felt will not hold it's shape very well when it gets wet and can benefit from some waterproofing. Good quality beaver felt, on the other hand, stands up pretty well to the rain.

If you spent a lot on the hat, may want to make sure it won't hurt the finish. The western Steton type hats, when they get beat up most of the guys will have them reblocked. It ought to cost about $10.00. Stiffens them up, etc. Check out stores selling western wear.

If it's good felt then it will stand up to weather just fine. But spray it if you want; its good to protect it. (no one will know 'les you tell them)
BTW, when i wore a hat every day i had a worn old 2X beaver, but i also had a nice 4x and that's the one i waterproofed, but not the other. one, or two, of the guys wore a cellophane hat cover in the rain, the non-PC type :haha:

Pssst! Secret! Scotch Guard will stiffen a "ordinary grade" felt hat, and waterproof it.

I bought a second hat mold from Bradley Company of The Fox. (www.bradleycompanyofthefox.com). I got brown and it is great. it cost $15 and $8 shipping. It is really cool. Well hope this helps I appreciate all the good advice Im gonna scotchguard it. Yall have a great one.
