Never used them, but read a lot of your posts referencing them. How do you make yours? What felt do you use, and where do you find it? What lube do you use? I shoot a T/C Pennsylvania Hunter roundball rifle and a 54 cal T/C Hawken with conicals, if that info helps. Will probably only use them in the 54.

I buy my felt from Durofelt. If you look at her sight she has it marked the typical type to use for shooting, though I've been considering buying thinner felt to use as a filler.

I use felt wads behind a ball in a cap n ball revolver or a Lee REAL in my rifle. I use pillow ticking for a ball in my rifle.

For lube I use Gatofeo's #1 lube on my wads, as well as my pistol and rifle conicals. I've only tried grape seed oil on patches as SWMBO gave me a scolding when she saw me eyeing her olive oil.

Some use a mixture of Ballistol and water. I've been meaning to try this on patches.

Ohioramrod makes custom punches at a very reasonable price. I have one for my pistols and one for my rifle.

I buy my felt from the same place and my punches from Ohio Ramrod too. I only use the felt wads under REALs with either corn oil or mink oil for a lube. I don't use them in revolvers because they are too thick for max. powder loads. I use a thin solid wad for them with lard/beeswax lube on the bullet side only.

That's what I use. I have found that a 1:6 mix of Ballistol/Water works great in all three of my rifles. I have been completely sold on the no fuss no mess dry lubed patch. Works wonderfully.

Looks like none of the egg companies up here use the spongy pulp paper cartons so I might have to start using felt.

Felt works but so does leather scraps. I use leather simply because I get scraps free. Which is my favorite price! :idunno:

Sometimes lamb tallow can be a little difficult to get quote]

I got some from the halal butcher at our big city market. When they figured out why I wanted it, I had 10 employees asking me through an interpreter questions about bp. Several guys had been in the army & told me their opinions of the AK, etc.

Most halal employees are religiously conservative and mad about young punks taking over Islam and distorting genuine Moslem values &beliefs.

Oh, and, they gave all the tallow I could ever use for my deep freezer.

IMHO, the material is pretty unimportant. Anything from cardboard to felt or wool will work. It is under the ball and will not affect performance. Go to a resale shop and look for old wool blankets or felt hats.

I've made hundreds for my 20ga smoothbores out of the wool or fur felt trimmings from the brims of a few hat blanks that I cut down when making round hats. A 5/8" punch, a cutting board, and a little labor gave me a good supply that I use over the powder for both shot and ball. Lubed with sheep tallow and beeswax, soaked while the lube was melted. Works great. While hunting small game with shot I often use one over the powder, one over the shot.
