If you use them do you use them wet with lube out of the package or do you dry them out before using them? I have had better luck with them dry, using a lubed patch on top. Does this make any sence or is it just me.

When I used wads I used them pre-lubed or lubed
them myself. I now use dry corn meal which should
have about the same effect as your dry wad method.
I use 10-15grs of meal for my .36cal, 15-20grs
.45/50cal 20-25grs .54cal all with good results.
The meal is cheaper and the leftovers makes good
bread. :winking:

I've always preferred to lube them myself ahead of time. The only pre lubed I've tried were the Wonder Wads and I wasn't impressed with their lube, or lack of it. Prelubed felt holds a lot more lube, and vegetable fiber holds even more.

I'm using them more & more with most of my muzzies. Yet no one sells the pre-lubed in bulk lots over 100. I go thru around 3 jugs of powder every year. Adding eight cents to every shot adds up quickly.

Is Corn Meal or Cream Of Wheat granules cheaper? What's the approximate protection-equivalent to a 1/8" wad... around 15 grains?

I use them with my .50. I'm convinced of the effectiveness, hunting or trekking (foot) I carry wads soaked in GO-JO then dryed some, less messy that way. If plinking I put dry wad into barrel (after powder of crse) then put a drop GO-JO atop with a picnic basket mustard squeeze bottle, the type that has a long 'snout' on it with a screw-on cap. Wally world or K-mart had 'em, forgot which. Then PRB and slide down. I use dry patch after every shot when plinking to simulate hunting conditions, I always go with a fouled barrel.

On 2nd thought, I withdrawl my question on Corn Meal or Cream of Wheat granules.

I certainly don't want to carry-along any pre-loaders - each filled with 15-20 gr. of Cream of Wheat granules for hunting. The made-up fiber wads are a much easier carry-along.

Disregard my earlier 11:14AM post please.

I have a small powder flask I carry cream of wheat in for my C&B revolver. Dispense it right from the flask with a small spout. No worrys about it becoming a bomb (but maybe becoming breakfast. :rotf: )

Snuffy: I carry my filler in a brass flask, with a 20 grain spout on it. The flask is medium sized, made in Italy, and carries about 1/2 pound of corn meal or Cream of Wheat. I am switching to corn meal because it is cheaper, coarser, and seems to scour the rifling as it exits the barrel, aiding in cleaning the gun. It compacts as well, and seals just as well as C/W. That added flask is no real inconvenience, while chasing around my wads in my bag can be a royal PITA!

Snuffy, if you go through a lot of wads, it works out cheaper to just buy the felt or veggie fiber and a punch. You can also vary the thickness, hardness, material and everything else until you find the perfect wad for your gun. Personally, I prefer a wad to filler. The wad carries a good deal of lube and helps clean as you shoot.

Plink: There is no reason I can think of not to use both a wad and a filler, if needed. I like the wads for holding the lube. I like the coarse fillers because they scrub the grooves so well.

Paul, I've never used them together. I guess it just didn't dawn on me to try. That's a great idea. Thanks. :)

I've never used any filler myself, just felt wad. I take a bore brush when plinking and run it ever now and again. But if you need coarse filler did you try grits - or does Ill. have any up there? :rotf:

Grits work, but that is processed corn, and we have corn meal here a lot cheaper! Yes, you can get grits here, although it is not an automatic add on to every breakfast you order here, as it often is down South. I like grits, although I was born and raised in the Chicago area. Must be some of that Missouri Blood in my lineage.
