noticed in my green mountain barrel manual (50 cal, 1-28") that you should not use fffg, only ffg....

but in the lyman manual, you can use either ffg, or fffg in the 1-48" twist barrel that came stock.

any comments as to why not fffg in the gm barrel?

I don't know why the manual states that, probably some lawyer wrote it. All I shoot is 3f in my GM barrel :hmm: My barrel is a swamped 44" 1 in 70 twist .54cal.
Happy Birthday The United States of America :hatsoff:

I use fffg in my G/M barrel  . Mine is .54 cal. 1"octagon , 32" long , 1:70 twist . I've put 90 grns fffg in it but I usually use 80 . Since I also shoot a .32 rifle and muzzleloading pistols , I use fffg in everything .

It may be because of the fast twist. 3f may give off too much pressure and the projectile will strip the rifling. Where as the lower pressure curve of 2f will allow the projectile to stay within the grooves of the barrel.

Agree with riverrat...legaleeze...I use 70-90grns Goex 3F in my GM .54cal Flint smoothbore all the time...and thats a .54cal in a 15/16" barrel...50 shots per range trip

All of you who say 3f is just fine are shooting SLOW twist barrels. His 50 cal is a FAST twist. I'd bet dollars to donuts that is why they don't recommend 3f in THAT particular barrel.

I can see your reasoning in that. However, wouldn't a load in 3f to achieve similar velocities act the same? :hmm:

I use the same max 3F PRB loads in my 1:48" as I do in my 1:66" barrels...and those 3F disclaimers have never been made about TCs fast twist barrels...hard to believe it's based upon actual fact from GM :shocked2:
