I dunno if this belongs here or not. This is a garden variety powder horn I bought from Track or one of the other suppliers a couple years back and the colours and patterns on it just seemed to scream 'wind'. I decided to start scrimming it but can't seem to capture it properly with a camera. The hues accidentally turned out to shade the girl's face and almost give it a sense of atmosphere that the camera can't seem to pick up...

I still have some stuff to add, but I hear you have to seal these things with beeswax. Is this correct? How is this done?

Can't tell you about the beeswax, but I can tell you that you're an artist, and I can see what you are trying to get with the girl. You just have to look at it for a minute.
Nice work!! :hatsoff:

Flthie, that is some great engraving. Very nice work.
SOme folks do use beeswax but it isn't the only thing that works. I have started using Johnsons Paste Wax and it works great. It also helps put some natural oils back in the horn to help preserve it. Just wipe on a light coat and buff it back to the shine you like.

Thanks fellers...it isn't quite finished yet, it's the first time I ever tried and I can't complain.

I am going to try another one and shell out a few more bucks for an all-white one.

Thanks for the advice and comments!

Filthe, I can see what you meant on my computer screen. It has slight shades that just look like wind going across the girl's face. Fabulous work there! :hatsoff:

I see the wind and in spite of it, the lady has such a sweet expression even with her eyes shut. The mark of a real artist is being able to read the medium that you are working with and to build upon it. Outstanding work!
