Finally Done! Oct/Rnd .54 rifled Virginia LR

After 4 years of having parts and working on it here and there, I finally finished my new Elk and Moose (heck anything I can!) Hunting Rifle!

Its a 42 inch .54 caliber Round Bottom rifled barrel from TOTW. Octagon to round. It has a hooked breach. The wood is a piece of curly Ash from Dunlap. It has a Large Siler and L&R double set triggers. I put a Johnson peep sight on it. I fashioned it after one I saw at TOTW.

I cut the PB out myself from one of Tracks PB kits. The side plate and muzzle cap are elk antler! This was my first attempt at a patchbox. I also did a little bit of simple carving, still a lot to learn!

I used the lye Wash Zonie wrote about, a coat of LMF maple, then a coat of Apple cider Vinegar/steel wool. 4 coats of Birchwood casey true oil and 3 coats so far of BC stock wax. The picture does not do the wood justice. It is a beautiful piece with nice figure.

The only thing left is to engrave the Patchbox but I want to practice a bit before I attempt it.

This is my 4th rifle from scratch. They get a little better each time but I know I have a long ways to go! I just love building them! I have the parts for a .36 cal squirrel rifle but may start on a French trade gun instead!

Now all I need is a Elk, Moose or deer tag!!

Nice job on a stepped wrist rifle.....that is a hard one! Great on the inlay....another patience test!!!
Please show me those rear sights....my eyes aren't as good as I once was....and peeps may be in order....I'm just not ready to cut a barrel until I see ones I like. :hmm:

And yup...I see your only 41, you'll make more and more....building flinters is very addictive....

I really like it, but I'm having a little trouble with the front sight. Due to the fact that it's an octagon to round, I need a tall sight to compensate for the difference in barrel thickness from breach to muzzle, really tall!

I also need to figure out a good post that I can see. I made a tall front sight but the brass I used is kind of thin. on sunny days I can see it but I think without some kind of bead at the top I may have a hard time seeing it under low light conditions. I may try and figure out a way to mount piece of bone.

Perhaps you could solder a short length of brass rod on top of the front sight to make it the right height and give the sight picture the look of a bead.

Here is the Bone "Bead" I made for the front sight. I made it square to make it easier to mount but I really like the resulting sight picture! A 6 o'clock gets me right in the bull!
