Finally going to shoot it, what else do I need?

I posted on here previously about owning a .54 cal Pedersoli Tryon rifle. I intent to take it to the range in the near future but I've been away from BP for nearly 20 years and forgot a lot.

OK supplies on hand...
Shooting supplies...
100 .530" Speer round balls.
100 0.015" prelubed cotton patches (TC).
200 No. 11 CCI Magnum percussion caps
Goex FFG black powder
Pyrodex FFFG-equivalent powder
Brass powder flask w/spout.
Brass powder measure marked in grains.
MSM ball started (brass w/wooden handle).
Combination screwdriver/nipple wrench
Hearing and eye protection.

Cleaning supplies...
Numerous cotton patches in various calibers (from shooting smokeless).
Hoppes #9
TC Bore Butter, one tube.
32 oz "Ol' Thunder Blackpowder Solvent.

Anything else I need?

A cleaning jag comes to mind. Do they have these for a .54 that would fit a regular cleaning rod?

You defiantly need a .54 cleaning jag. They come in two thread sizes, #8-32 and #10-32.
It might be a good idea to take your ram rod with you to make sure the thread size on the jag is correct.
Another idea is to try screwing a standard #8-32 screw into your ramrod at home. If it fits snugly into the hole, then that's the size to get. (my Tryon has a #8-32 thread in it but yours might not.)
If it almost (but not quite) falls into the hole, the hole is probably a #10-32.

By the way, you don't want to try to use a #8-32 in a #10-32 hole because although it loosely fits and will seem to snug down, there isn't enough thread engagement in the joint.
If you do this, when you try to pull the ramrod back up out of the bore, the jag will tear loose from the ramrod threads and stay behind.

Also, for wiping between shots, just plain old water or spit will work fine.
Don't use a large patch for wiping. It should be just big enough to fully cover the jag.
If you use a big patch (like one for a 12 guage) it will hang up in the bore when you try to pull the ramrod/jag back out.
That's because it will "bunch up" on top of the jag, to the point that it will take 2 grown men and a mule to pull it out.

That will do for a start. You will probably have to try some other combinations of patch and ball to get the best accuracy, like .535 ball and .018 ticking for patches.

It will probably take 100 or so rounds to get the barrel to settle in. :m2c:

Looked over your list and didn't see a worm or ball puller. Now you could probably go years without needing the ball puller, but who knows. The worm is different. I can't count the number of times that a patch has decided to remain in the barrel instead of coming back up on the jag. Could be the best two and a half bucks that you ever spent.

Birdwatcher,.... It's been a long time since I owned a Tyron rifle so,.... jest in "case",.... I'd recommend thet you "pin" the ramrod end to yore ramrod (if it ain't already "pinned") even if you plan to do all yore clean'n with some other rod.
Ya never know, but what you might haft'a use yore rifle's ramrod fer clean'n when you ain't got tha other one handy.

I can't count the number of times that a patch has decided to remain in the barrel instead of coming back up on the jag.

Scew the edge of the patch down tight UNDER the shoulder of the jag, or punch a hole in the patch and thread the jag on through the hole. :winking:

 

I did not see reference to a gun bearer, table and white cloth, silver tea service, maid in waiting, game keeper and a flask of a good quality Scotch Whisky. Other than these few items the list looked pretty good to this bloke.

Interesting to hear (on another thread) about ramrods and patches getting stuck in the bore, once I had to tie my old Zouave to the house and the ramrod to the bumper of my girlfriend's truck to get that sucker out (musta had a pinned ramrod )
