I've just about completed makming a horn spoon from a cow horn. I was told to wipe cooking oil on the horn when I'm finished to protect it. Seems I heard something about to use only certian types of cooking oils because some will make the horn crack over time.I think it was something about salt in the oil. Is this true and if so what type of oil should I use? Thanks for your help... Longshot

Claude's right!... I use one and have made a few with nothing put on them, but vittles at supper time! Use, wash-off and store till next use!

Ps.....Never leave sitting in hot sun or liquids for obvious reasons!

Don't own them and don't use them, but I've sure handled a variety in archeological digs and museums. They dated from around 1860 back a thousand years or so, and all were bighorn sheep, dall sheep or mountain goat. And I don't recall any sign of finish on any, even the most recent. Mebbe cow horn would be different, but in thinking about making one myself from cow, I never even gave finish a thought, however.
