Does anyone know of any books that cover the types of finish used on original British Long Land musket stocks. I have heard of paint, linseed oil, various varnishes, and beeswax but I am looking for some actual documentation that I can work with. I have run across different books out there that give the history and design of the weapon but I don't know if any of them actually get into the finishing details.
I want to try using a period finish on a piece of wood and let it sit outside for a few months giving the type of care that a field soldier would have been able to give his weapon and see how well it willl hold up.
