I finished installing my first patchbox on my Bedford rifle today. It could use a little touchup here and there to finish it off, but it is fairly close to being done. I ended up with a few gaps, but I used Mike Brooks suggestion and glued in a couple of wood strips in the gaps. I think it looks better than leaving a gaping hole, and it shouldn't show too much after it's stained. What do you think for a first try?

I plan on trying to carve a design from a John Amos rifle on the other side. I have plenty of wood, so if I screw it up, I can always sand it off and leave it flush.

Wished I had seen Mike's tutorial before I started this rifle. It could of saved me a lot of work in installing the ramrod pipes.

Please don't tell me if I inletted it upside down or backwards. :shake: :rotf:

Well done!! Beats me by a loooong shot. Best I can do would be with a handfull of 20 penny nails and a hammer!

Looks great! You even lined up all the screws. I just can't make myself do that, no patience. :haha:

You did a GREAT job Bioprof, especially for your first patchbox. I have one question, are those brass screws or is it just the lighting in the photo?
Don

Bio,
Wood is fine as filler, don't get me wrong. But, have you ever thought about acraglas? It's easier, fills all gaps, strenghtens, and once the rifle is stained, you'll never see it. I really love the stuff (gonna take a lot of grief) but it's a gunbuilders best friend IMO.

Don't you just love those pierced patchboxes?

Folks, you don't know what fun is until you install one of these things!

Way to go bioprof! :) :)
