Early KS muzzle loader.

6:55 am Central time

.54 Cal Great plains rifle

35 yd shot

Small doe (only one I saw)

shoulder hit went clear through... Dropped dead in it's tracks.

I have to thank RollingB for teach'n me how to build a rifle gun. He help'd me pick the gun to build, and kept me from ruin'n it while I built it. I was hopin' he'd be back by now and I could give him a call and let him know his student kill't one on the first shot. There's little doubt that this is a fine rifle, and I had a fine master. Thanks RB!

First blood to you...

The more you get, the less I'll hit with my car... (that's another story)

Get another...

Musketman,

Both you and Zonie are also "responsible" (gotta use that word carefully) parties in the death of this deer. I mean that both of you help'd with the construction of this here shoot'n Iron. If Rollin'b's like a dad I guess you two would be crazy mountain men uncles!

I didn't forget yer help.. probly should jest said somethin' in the first post. Stop by the house and I'll cook up some of this tenderlion, with some onions.

Congrats Spot... see Spot hunt, see Spot kill deer.

Anyway, this is the time of year that I truly love and absolutely hate.
I love the anticipation of an early season hunt. Usually I can't sleep well at night thinking about the deer sneaking around my deer stands. I'm wondering if the work in the woods (putting up stands, planting, scouting) in the spring and summer will pay off. I love everything about the hunt.
What I hate about this time of year are the unprepared hunters that take to the woods. They haven't practiced with their bow, and their inline is still rusty from last year. This is the time of year to see animals walking in the woods with arrows still in them and three legged deer. It's a shame. Somewhere in my heart I know that traditonal ML hunters do their homework.

Again, congratulations Spot

Congrats on bloodin' yer firelock. May you get many more!

I've got to wait till Monday the week of Thanksgiving Nov. 22 before I can hunt with my flintlock. Bow season starts Oct. 16 though plan to get out there with my stickbow and cedar shafts after em!

After all your questions about conicals, which one did you use?

Herb,

I went with Great Plains bullets of course.

What else would a man use in a Great Plains rifle!

Only made sense.. but the buggers are just a bit heavier so my powder charge is a bit lower than the 90 FF I was use'n with Roundballs. I haven't weighted the charge yet, but it's under 80 grains. Most likely around 72 to 75.

I've noticed my measure gives me 90 when it's at 95 so having it just below 80 should put me just under 75? HELL of a thump though. Thank God Sharps suggested movin' it out on my shoulder a bit, I only had a BDU shirt on and I just look'd... no marks.

WELL.. I hope this whiskey and coke kicks in soon. I just got done cutt'n up Deer #1 and the truck is load'd for the mornin' ::.

I can only shoot one more doe, and one buck outside of the Unit 19 area, then I'm stuck with does intside there. KS rules are a bit Odd, but fine with me. Wish me luck fellers - I'm goin' agin in the morn'n. Muzzle loader here is open all week, and closes next Sunday so with any luck I'll be good.
