well I went over to my friend Aarons house for some great hunting action. Aaron is on the forum and his forum name is Thomp shooter and got his first muzzleloader squirrel yesterday. This story is from last week, before he got the squirrel. Sense he hasnt got a muzzleloading shotgun yet he used his modern shotgun. So we were going to have a challange. who could get the most doves. modern shotgun vs muzzleloader shotgun. The day that we went wasnt to good for doves and we ended up not finding the huge flocks and only being able to find small groups of them. but we still did our best. here is the whole story.

6:00 am. monday morning. As i finished loading up my 32 flinter I could hear Aaron coming down the road on his 4 wheeler. When he got to my house we went over our plans for the day. We were to pack breakfest and fire starting stuff in our backpacks and head out into the center of the woods. There we were going to start a fire and cook breakfest. on the menu was hot coco, coffee, and a couple squirrels i had shot the day before with my thompson center 45. we gathered our stuff and headed out. we found a nice place to make a fire. It was still pitch black as we gathered small twigs and pulled the newspaper and lighter out of my backpack. we go the fire started with no problems and soon we had a nice fire to cook the squirrels on.

we also boiled water for our coco and coffee and peacefully waited until sunrise. when the sun came up we were disapointed to see rain clouds on the horizon. The squirrels also knew this because they werent out eating like they should of been. we managed to see 3 squirrels but none presented shots. we started walking home as when we were almost there a light rain started to fall.we reached the house and sat in there for a little while. After an hour the rain stopped and we decided to go try for some doves. I traded my 32 finter for my navy arms NWTF 12 guage double. When we got to Aarons house we could see some small groups of doves and we quickly started our hunt. The first shots we got were at a small group of doves in a picked wheat field. Aaron walked thru the wheat field while I walked on the edge of it. A dove flew up infront of Aaron and he shot at it but he didnt lead it enough and only got a couple tail feathers out of it. As he shot, another dove flew up and flew out infront of me. It was over 30 yards away and flying straight across. i threw up my gun, lead the dove by 5 or 6 feet and pulled the trigger. Through the smoke I saw the dove fold up and drop to the ground ! I could not belive it, I actually got one ,and a darn good shot to lol. I picked up my dove and we went over to another spot. In the distance we saw 4 doves sitting on the ground. we decided to do a drive. I was going to be 30 yards down from the doves, hiding in a fence row, while Aaron walked up on the from the other side. I sat at the fence row and waited. I saw the doves fly up and heard Aaron shoot, but he forgot to lead again and missed. I watch the doves fly straight away. I sat there wishing I would of got a shot when I looked up to see one of the doves turn around. It was coming at me and it was coming quick ! I crouched behind the brushy fence row and waited. the dove was coming 40 yards,30 yards,20 yards...when it was 15 yards away and coming straight at me I jumped up and shot. the dove folded up and fell right towards me. I could of jumped up and grabbed it out of the air as it fell. It hit the ground with a thud and slid a couple feet thru the grass. I picked it up and walked over to Aaron. we sat behind the fence row, talking,as I reloaded my gun. then we looked up to see 4 doves, swooping in,at 15 yards. we both pulled our guns up and Aaron shot first, smacking a dove. I shot but missed. We were happy that both of us got doves. Then as we were hunting we found a squirrel high in a tree, eating a nut. I shot at it,but forgot that I had #8 shot, which was not enough for the squirrel that was in the top of the tree. it did stun the squirrel tho,and it quickly started running down the tree. It stopped near the bottom where Aaron dropped it with his shotgun at 10 yards. We had a great hunt, and we were both impressed how effective the muzzleloader shotgun was. In the end we called it a tie sense we both got 2 kills.Enjoy SS
