Had a .45cal set up with a squirrel load...one came along, saw me sitting against a tree, ran up a tree about 15-20yds in front of me and perched on a limb about 15' up in that classic "perched squirrel" pose...raised the rifle, squeezed the trigger, and he fell straight down like a brick...I realized aftward that I didn't even think about a head shot...just put the bead on him like it was a tiny deer and shot.

Anyhow, that was my first flintlock squirrel...and probably the first squirrel I've shot out of a tree since the 60's...sure brought back memories...I'm gonna do some more of this !

Congrats Roundball,

I can remember my first squack taken with a ML rifle it was a .50 cal. TC Hawken. Back about 30 years ago I did the same thing centered him right behind the shoulders. It didn't tear him up too bad as I remember made a neat 1/2 inch hole in his ribs.

Good going! Yep you are now hooked on squirrel hunting again. I see many people get ready for deer hunting and in my area that is one deer over about 10 days(wouldn't miss it though!). Squirrels are fair game for 120 days. Many more days of fun!

i have just a 50 hawken for deer i hope after deer is over i will work up a load for squirrel

In my .45cal, 25-30grns Goex FFFg would probably be fine for squirrels but I intentionally stopped at 40grns as both squirrel & deer seasons run concurrently where I hunt...wanted to have enough 'umph' to ensure a clean kill if a deer happend by close enough...and sure enough, filled a doe tag with the squirrel load just a couple weeks ago.

a lot more meat on a deer, but i love to squirrel hunt, have 1 deer (doe) in the icebox got it with a 30/30

I practiced several weekends this summer on a 1+3/4" steel disc at 25yds, and bagging that squirrel up in that tree with a flintlock was very satisfying...going again on Monday!

Roundball,

Way to go! You know I should have posted something in the "most exciting flintlock hunt" thread, as squirrels are a BLAST!!! Good luck with the next time you get out and save me a piece of fried Limb Chicken!

He's usin a straightened clothes hanger for a ramrod on that .22 I betcha.

Mine .22 loads from the muzzle, too. Well, into the little tube under the barrel, but it is from the muzzle end.

Hey Fellers,

My mentor built a .22 cal ML it shoots .22 cal. pellets little 15 grainers I think. My buddy puts 10 gr. FFFg Goex in it doggone thing sounds like a .38 it's loud. I bet it would shoot just as good with a lot less powder. But it's his daughters gun he's never hunted with it.
