Out of the last group of knives coming out of the shop I had a hankering to do a few full tang knives. The large knife was forged from a Nicholson file and the smaller was forged from 1084. Both blades are hafted to mule deer sheds and the butt caps were forged from scrap pieces of a lower quality carbon steel that I had laying around the scrap pile. Both have a single steel pin and pewter bolsters. For first attempts I am pretty happy, but learned a few good lessons too.

Don't you mean through tang knives? Full tang normally means full length and width with slab grips. Although I personally do not like drooping blades, other than that, they look very good. Great color too.

When doing through tang grips, a cross pin is not necessary, although I suppose it does no harm. Just extra work.

The color is achieved with a mixture of dye that is applied and then set with a little heat. Without the heat it will not set the best. Also these hafts are sheds that have been weathered. They are still very sound, but are dry...if that makes sense. If your interested in knowing more send me a private message and I can discuss it more.
