I'm no artist so I won't attempt to decorate like some of the Masters I see here... This horn was given to me by my Mother. She said she found it in some of my Dad's old stuff. She said Dad picked it up off the ground while deer hunting. I have no idea how long he'd had it.

So I got some tips from a friend/horn maker and decided to give this a shot. I drilled it out, fit a piece of brass for the spout and a piece of pine for the end plug. It turned out better than I thought it would. It's perfect size for a small priming horn.

I would like to dress it up a little. Maybe darken the white portion and add a small inscription... Tips and pointers are welcome...

Jim, Looks pretty darn good to me! If you want to darken your horn a bit. Get yourself some Aquafortis and that will do the trick. If you want to do some simple engraving on it. Just use an exacto knife with a #11 blade in it. Break about 1/8" off the blade and your set!,,, There is all types of tech stuff and tools I could tell you about, but for what you want to do. The above advise will work!

Good luck,
Rick

nice looking horn. now that you've got one, you may want to look at Track of the Wolf's book, Recreating the 18th Century Powder Horn by Scott & Cathy Slibey

(ha ha ha - another one turned to the dark side)

the nice thing about horns is that you can do 'em just about anywhere, you don't need a bunch of fancy or expensive equipment, and each one is unique.
