Well I suppose after making my knife and sheath, shot block, and round ball pouch...the hunting pouch was the next logical choice.

Here she be.

Total cost $1.99 for the strap and copper washed steel buckles from a thrift shop.
Course there was the labor about 3 hours plus or minus a few grumpy and gripey moments during the build. Anyway it is my first attempt and after field use I may either modify it or make another. I left the beaver tail style flap oversized to trim to taste if I choose. It's lined with the FREE cotton cloth from the dumpster diving sortie and the leather is from the couch my boss tossed and I skinned. Right now the finish is as off the couch withfamily wear and tear ageing. Should I wax or oil it or any other leather treatment for weatherproofing? A good Crisco rub maybe?

Nice Job Steve

Always good to see what can be made from what others throw away! Did it take you long to rope that sofa.... they can be cantankerous beasts! LOL

Don't know what to tell you about aging the leather. I'm sure someone can tell you more then I can in that department.

Happy Shooting! :v

Ha ha

I've skinned a few couches in my day and routinely raided the leather scraps from a previous upholstery job.
Scroungers unite! :hatsoff:

I think it looks quite good, especially for a first attempt.
In my experience, bags and pouches made from the thinner upholstery leather are often made better by taking a slightly thicker, different colored leather to sew on top of the flap.

This stiffens up the flap and keeps it in place. I've noticed that when you leave the leather in a single layer, it tends to roll, crumple up or simply get snagged out of shape.

Other than that, you did an excellent job and should take pride in using it.

Thanks for the ideas.

The couch already had a broken spine and was on its last legs. Several rambunctious teenage boys used it as a trampoline and wrestling prop so all I had to do was flip it, ventilate it and get to skinnng. Lotsa good projects will come out of it. Maybe a handsome set of leggins, chaps or trousers. We'll see.

I have three mule deer legs from a roadkill critter near the house and was going to use the dewclaws and skin for the front flap. However I was late on collecting them and had to soak the fur off, skin and peel the bones and then extract the rancid marrow so they'll dry better for knife handles. Pew!! what smelly things they are. So I may add the stiffer under layer of leather for the flap as I can see it will try to go curly.
