And probably the worst stitching you’ve ever seen ”“ but still I’ll put it out here. Those are the first two things I did with leather. One is a roundball bag the other a shot bag, both for my 28 gauge Smoothie.

The RB bag doesn’t have a stopper it’s sowed so that the ball can be pushed out with fingers. It holds about 30.

(gravity test)

The lead shot bag has a 45-70 case (huh, what’s that??? :hmm: ) as a stopper and measure.
By tilting the bag along the straight side and then pinching the leather together one can get a pretty consistent and quick fill of 1 1/8 oz. It holds about 20 loads.

So I’m ready, bring it on

Very smart idea the 45.70 case for a buckshot measure. :hatsoff:

Perhaps sewing with sinew, artificial sinew, for a more old ages style.

Good start. You might try some necks and stoppers for your next project. Flared copper tubing was available in places as were lathe turned wood, bone or horn. Here is a pic of some flared copper tubing used as necks:

I would respectfully suggest sewing any bag inside out, then forcing the bag rightside out through the opening, so as to hide most of the stitching.

(If the leather's stiff, a little dampening w/warm water should make it pliable enough)

Also, while stitching of a contracting color has it's place (and fans), I usually use a dark brown color for the stitching, or stain the stitches later with shoe polish.

Thank you for the remarks and help offered.

The copper tubing is a good idea - might try that next. I was actually playing with some type of wood with spongy inner part - it's still drying and I'll see how that would work. Might try to play with the drill as a woodworking lathe next. But too little time.

Was thinking about sowing inside out - might have been good. Next time

Actually the bags are ...-ugly, but one has to start somewhere. Linen thread and sinew are on the shopping list, as is a real awl.

Thanks again and you've been really kind

You are well on the way to being as messed up as the rest of us.
Welcome to the therapy room :shocked2:

Ain't nothing wrong with that Silex so long as it works. The only guy you have to impress around here is the guy in the mirror when you shave in the morning!

The first efforts are seldom purdy, but you will be surprised at how fast your work improves after a few tries.
