i want to get a flintlock for my first muzzleloader. i will use it for utah mule deer and want to use home cast lead balls help he choose a muzzleloader and stuff for 400 ish. and what twist

Check out the Lyman guns. Great Plains Rifle and Trade Rifle.
Traditions makes some decent low-priced guns.
Maybe Cabelas.
Look around for a used T/C in good shape.
Go with what you like.

I would suggest either .50 or .54 caliber. 1:48 or 1:60 or 1:66 twist will work. Faster twist is better for conicals, slower for round-balls. 1:48 is supposed to be the dividing line. Whatever gun you choose you will have to find the load it likes.

Have fun with your new addiction. :)

Edit; try and get real black powder. And read the Flintlock Shooting Tips over in the flint forum.

Captain&dfchifire,
I have that in .50 but right
handed and it is a fine shooting F/L. The 1/60
twist make it great with PRB. Being a .54, I
would think even elk would be fair game if the
opportunity arose. IMO
snake-eyes :hmm:

I have both recommended rifles, the .45 GPR and the trade rifle in .54. They are very fine and accurate shooters and easy to handle. Use them with blackpowder to avoid ignition problems and shoot PRB'S. With the right load they shoot outstanding.

Greetings from Germany
