This is a pistol I am building for a friend. He always wanted a flinter, but with a wife, 3 kids and a limited budget, he doesn't have much to spend.
The barrel is a 50 cal rifle barrel that was salvaged, given to me free from another builder, a Jack Garner stock and lock, furniture that I had left over from other projects. side plate screws and washers from the hardware store
Is going to have some steel and some brass on it, but that's ok..
the barrel is a slow twist rifle barrel, I told him we can always bore it out and make it a smoothie.
Still needs work, and she is still a fat pig, but it's coming along.

Very nice job. As far as a fat pig goes, it looks like you are on your way to making a silk purse out of it. What kind a trigger guard are you going to use?

I had a steel fowler one that I bent to close what I needed, but after working it a few too many times. It cracked.. I don't know how to make steel soft like brass.
I bought a brass one from Track. I didn't charge my friend for it..
It is going to have a brass endcap and trigger guard. Steel thimble's, ramrod tip and I need to do something about the side palate.
I was thinking steel washers cut into a four petal design??
I will brown the barrel and fire blue the screws
Just a nice dark LMF stain and some LMF sealer.
Hope he likes it

I like the butt shape  looks neat to me.Is the pistol based on a specific historical analog? It looks nice so far and keep us posted!

yes it is.
I proabably should have had him cut it a little shorter.

You will get a nice long sight plane on it. Plus he can use the exercise that comes from holding it out with one hand

She is done and I am giving her away tommrow.
My first attempt at carving, come out OK, nothing very good and I can point out all the flaws on her,
she only has one underlug, but that's because it was a salvaged rifle barrel
I hope I Got it thin enought
Rusty will like it anyway and I did my best

The craftsman allways sees the flaws. For layout(Checkering & Carving)I use exposed X-RAY Film.Take your Design Tracing transfer to X-film cutout and trace. The cutout is reusable and flexiable.Nice wood with good fit and finish. Thanks for posting :) !

I'll Take it. I wish it my first., second.,or third., or even fourth gun. I appreciate the finish to the barrel and the lock as well. I dont have one like it and wish I did. Good Show Man

nice job i am building a pistol also really just restocking an old cva mountain pistol. i like your carving behind the tang i might try something simular. i see you used washers on the sideplate side i might try washers with wings or a full sideplate although not apropriate because this pistol is really just a practise piece. your friend should be very happy and youshould be proud of your build.any time you do something nice for a friend it just makes you feel good.

curly maple

I would have used a real side plate as a first choice.
I offered to build it for him for the cost of the parts.
The barrel came with a nice block of cherry, but when it when to be inletted, it didn't work, so I had to buy a new piece of maple, driving up the cost.
Isn't that the way it always works???
I really simpathise with professional builders, if they make a BIG OPPS, they are stuck with buying a new stock. ouch, there goes their payday.

But I went to Rusty and told him he needed to pay me more for the parts.
the washers are reasonable solution.
I need to fix the screws also. they look a little wimpy in the picture.
I used a 6x32 in the front. I was concerned about the ramrod channel
Flat headed screws would look better, when I order another set of parts I will get some.
and put them on.

Looks like it turned out nice to me. The real proof will be in how well it shoots. Let us know how it shoots when ya'll get around to it. Heck, you should start building pistols and selling em', you could pick up a few extra bucks doint that.
:hatsoff:
