well I finally hunted squirrel with my .32 green mountain barrel on a TC hawken...My 3 year old and I went out to the timber and sat quietly got a clean head shot. Those round ball barrels are so accurate well barrel is dry so got to go.

Congratulations

It's great that you had your 3 year old with you. Next time take some pictures and post em.

I'm jealous, and happy for you at the same time! It's great that you get to start your kid out young. Congrats on the hunt. I'm just gearing up for hunting squirrel with BP this year too.

buttonbuck,
O.K. you got a squirrel with your
.32 for the first time :applause: :applause:
Now tell us how you kept a 3 year old quiet
enough to do it. I think the first time I took
my son into the woods for a squirrel hunt he was
either 5 or 6 years old. He knew we were going to do this for maybe a week, and I kept telling
him how important it was to stay silent while we
were hunting. Well on the day of the hunt we got settled in, and then it started. Dad what's that
noise? Dad,I'm hungary.(we ate at the Waffle House
30 minutes ago)Dad i gotta pee.Dad what if it rains.Dad, do you think squirrels like us. You get the picture. I would not trade those hunts for anything. Today he is 30 and I'm 61 and
everytime we go hunting together I tell him how
hungary I am and how bad I have to pee and he
laughs and remembers as do I, sometimes with a
bit of a tear in my eye.
Those days are presious, enjoy everyone
that you get.
snake-eyes :hmm:

Now why did you go and post this.

I'm thinking I'm tired of waiting for deer season. Just checked the hunting regulations on Wise County, Tx. where the LBJ National Grasslands are located (they are mostly Oak forests) for squirrel and found "no closed season-no bag limit) and I checked Cookies recipe site for squirrel and I checked.........and so on.

I think I'll try the .45 GMB on Saturday.

Congratulations on the first muzzleloader squirrel...you'll never forget it. :hatsoff:

I got my first one year before last with a .45cal flintlock...and the image of that object dropping straight down out of the tree like a brick brought back memories from the 60's when I last squirrel hunted...was almost as thrilled with that Flintlock squirrel as I was my first Flintlock deer.

It'll be interesting to see if your 3 year old remembers it long term...but if you keep taking him regularly, he sure will...

I started taking my 14 year old hunting when he was or 5 bowhunting for deer, I had him use the deer call sure enough he called in some interested does he was used to repeating things said to him since he was in speach therapy at the time. The 3 year old you set the ground rules about 20 times in he truck on the ride over you have to bring something active for kids a drawing pad whatever the kid is into. I work as a teacher with students with severe behavior disorders, so i enjoy my own kids a lot even though they know my buttons and make me look unprofessional. The 14 year old has successfully taken a deer a year for 3 seasons, my daughter was psyched about the squirrel she wants to go again, cooked the squirrel on the BBq after 24 hours in a poultry brine it was better than the domesticated rabbit we brined and grilled with it.

no closed season and no bag limit? I'm gonna hafta see how far that is from El Paso. Sounds like a great spot!

Well from ElPaso that is for sure a long drive for squirrel. I'll guarantee you "see" them though.

It appears that most counties around here have no closed season and no bag limit. The trick is in having a place to shoot.

I live 5 miles from ElPaso Illinois people always say man you got a heck of a drive when I travel from chicago to here. 120 miles

Now I'm really jealous!! The squirrel in Montana are not much more than long tailed chipmunks :( . I've tried for years (to no avail) to convince my wife that the big Grays we used to shoot in Iowa (where I grew up), were the size of large cats! This last issue of Muzzleloader had a picture of a fella with three or four limb chickens across a log. I showed my wife the picture and you should have seen the look on her face :shocked2: !!! I've thought about calling my cousins in Iowa, to make a pilgimage for REAL squirrel. Maybe I'll actually get off my butt and do it now.

TDW,
If those Iowa greys are the size of a large
cat then the fox squirrels of Ohio must look like
medium size dogs scrambling thru the trees :rotf: :rotf: :rotf: :rotf:

The other day I was out scouting a management area with a buddy, and while we were walking I heard a noise. I stopped to look and almost soiled myself! I thought what I saw was the biggest squirrel ever!! It was on a pine tree about as big around as my thigh (I am kinda chubby, so it was thick) and I saw its hands and feet on either side with the tail occasionally peeking out as it climbed. It got about halfway up and stopped to check us out since we spooked it. It was a racoon!! I almost fell out laughing there as did my buddy - he thought the same thing!

Pork Chop,
I'm just taking a guess here but I would have to think in Iowa they call those
racoons, bears :hmm:

My only nearby option is Cloudcroft NM. It's close, but the season is short. It might be worth the drive to get some hunting in during the "off season." Squirrel hunting is one of my all time favorites.
