I'm going to attend a shoot at my local club and was wondering what I need to take with me. I mean, what do you guys stock in your shooting box? And how many roundballs and how much powder should I take? New at this and I know I'll learn more from the guys at the shoot, but wanted to go "prepared". : )

I've never used a shoot'n box, but I never go shoot'n without my haversack thet contains a small leather (draw string) leather pouch.
Contents of leather pouch includes: clean'n jag, nipple pick, nipple wrench, bore light, small brass drift, small brass knap'n rod, extra flints, small pan charger full of FFFFG (in case someone needs it to "blow out" a dry ball, only had one'a these disappear and not git returned).

'Sides my small leather pouch, my "haversack" contains: asperins, extra rolls of ticking, short lead pencil, flint'n steel, char cloth, tow, a "tin" of bear oil/bee's wax lube, Leatherman tool, full "tin" of caps, and sometimes a sandwich ::!!

I've only got 2 hands,.... 1 fer cary'n my rifle and tha other'n fer "find'n my way" to tha fire'n line (I'm blind ya know!), so I don't need ta be lug'n a shoot'n box 'round (probly jest trip over it anyway and hurt ma'self )!!

The best way to find out what you need is to see what you are without and add that for the next time, add as you go...

Take black powder, priming powder (flintlocks), extra flints/percussion caps (depending on what system you take), shooting patches, patch lube, powder measurer, cleaning jag, cleaning patches, ball puller , nipple wrench, extra nipple, tooth picks/wire pick, small screw driver, gun oil, ball starter...

Others items range from ear-plugs, shooting safty glasses, extra ramrod/range rod, ink pen/marker, 3X5 index cards/targets, staple gun (hang targets), Muzzleloading Forum bumper stickers to pass out to fellow shooters... :winking:

I always take more then I need of everything. If it's a 20 shot aggregate/match, I'll take 200 round balls and patches and 2 pounds of powder, 400 percussion caps, or 10 flints, 200 cleaning patches, oh the list in my mind just goes on and on. You can not have enough in your range box of anything. The one thing you'll need, you won't have. That's the way it goes???

If your allowed to put a dab of paint on your front sight, don't forget that, (Testors Model Paint, White, Red, Gray, and Black. Plenty of tooth picks also). Q-tips are always handy as is pipe cleaners. Spare nipples, nipple wrench, screwdriver to adjust rear sight, or small hammer and drift punch if sight's are fixed.

I started life out with one range box. I'm now at two??? :hmm: You'll know after your first couple shoots. Don't forget your sight shader's if your allowed to use them? Sunglasses/safety glasses, and ear protection comes in handy, as does elbow pads for prone shooting. Take along spare ramrods, and a spare cleaning rod. Don't forget your spotting scope. Take some food and drink with you if your going to be out all day.

Joe,.... Ya fergot ta mention tha, wall tent and firewood!!!!

Like I said, the one thing you need, you won't have... Now I'm going to have to build two more boxes. One for my wall tent, and one for my firewood... :hmm: What if I just boxed in my trailor and hauled it all in that??? :RO: How many months to rendezvous??? ::

Be prepared to shoot at least 30 rounds but not much more.,,have ta hand accuterments fer cleaning and dry-ball loading/pulling.(so ya can help the other guy!) A pound of powder,a box of ball, and patch ta shoot it is usually more than enough.

Depends how big the club is and how big their range is,,and how well they run it. A small club with 30 shooters and 30 shot's?? Well,,that takes 2 maybe 2 1/2 hours,,and it's all really fun!!

Shoot cards! Cut strings! Split the ball! snuff a candle! Have sum fun!

I'll tell ya a little sumpthin,,just because you participate here,,you'll do really well at that shoot!!
You Know yer stuff>
Don't pay no attention to them grumpy old bastards,,tell'm all yer new at this kinnda shootin, then show'm the pictures!
You'll do just fine,,luck to ya,,

I have a 10 X 16 round top shoot box I take and leave in the truck. For the line I have my 2 powder horns and my fowler bag with 20 RB, a cO2 dischargers, a flint wallet, short starter, knapping pliers and my patch knife

Back at the truck in the box I have a short set of tools I could get by with if someone needs a repair that can be done on the spot. This consists of 3 locks " one flint, one early percussion both siler and one old Springfield " an assortment of main springs, sear springs and different screws. I also keep a complete set of needle files a brass screwdriver set and a small ball ping hammer, As well as a pin drill
3 Lbs of powder" 2f,3f,4f" 3 boxes of RB for 60, 54 and 50 cal as well as cleaning supplies extra cO2 and 4 sizes of flints ranging from 1 inch to 3/8s
Also in the box is a bag with 62 and 69 cal over the powder and over the shot cards for shooting shot if we so decide .

For your first shoot I would take powder"in a horn or container you can use on the line" , patch, and ball a short starter as well as a cO2 discharger if you have not bought one yet, get one , That will give you a good start . After the shoot you will have a better idea as to what
