Probably my favorite reference is Rifles of Colonial America. Shumway gives more details on the rifles pictured than any other book I have seen. If you look at this info you will quickly see that even rifles attributed to the same maker can be very different. Machine made products today are all made to what someone decided was an average size unfortunately few people are actually that size. I am 5' 11" and weigh about 180 lbs so the average should work for me but it doesn't. Because of an injury to my right hand when I was around 20 years old I can only bend my trigger finger to around 45 degree so I need a slightly longer LOP to compensate for that. I have a great Nephew who is about the same height but weighs about 225 pounds but the LOP on my rifles is to long for him. I make my own rifles but if I was going to have a custom rifle made it would definitely have to be made to fit me before I would part with that kind of money. When you bring a rifle to your shoulder you should not have to search for the trigger or the sights they should be there.
